Extra food stamp benefits enacted by Congress at the height of the pandemic ended this week, even as grocery prices surge.

The average food stamp benefit will come to about $6 per person per day.

Need I remind you that we passed a record $857 billion defense bill last year?

@rbreich
We’re spending a fortune to defend the country from a few hostile threats while our citizens are facing hunger and domestic terrorists. We live on a budget, so can the DOD.

@rbreich @punko

I relish every unfortunate opportunity I’m presented to yell at Congress to

𝐅𝐔𝐍𝐃 #π„πƒπ”π‚π€π“πˆπŽπ π‹πˆπŠπ„ π˜πŽπ” 𝐅𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 πŒπˆπ‹πˆπ“π€π‘π˜, π˜πŽπ” 𝐂𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐄𝐍 π‚πŽπ–π€π‘πƒπ’.

@rbreich They also cut SNAP benefits overall despite a recent cost of living increase. My food assistance was cut by $30. That’s about 90% of a grocery order for me. Mostly affects those on SSD/SSI. Social Security recipients have a cost of living increase and I guess the food benefit write down because of that? It doesn’t make a lot of sense because they’re completely differently handled. I don’t buy actual food groceries with my SS money, just the delivery fee etc.

@rbreich But the military obviously isn’t funded enough and is far more important than food security. <heavy sarcasm alert if not obvious>

Im so tired of this bs we can’t afford things when we continue to spend absurd amounts into the military machine, though never enough for our vets. I have no idea how we’re ever going to change this and it is so damn frustrating.

@rbreich

Interestingly, the US military budget is about the same as giving every person in the US $7.09 a day.
