one thing nobody ever talks about regarding being an adult, is how much time you debate yourself on keeping a cardboard box because it is a really, really good box
@benteh Six words I dread hearing are "Hey, do you want this box?" Because, yes I do *sobs* of course I do
@benteh There’s still room in the garage/house/storeroom, and it would be a shame if I ever needed it.
@benteh I had to throw out 5 or 6 perfectly good boxes yesterday 😭
@amokura @benteh I freegle excess boxes and packaging if I can't give them away to people I know.
@benteh One of those boxes is labelled "Pieces of string, too small to be of use".
@psneeze ah. we must have a monty python fan in the building
@benteh I just wish I had that debate. Instead I've got a corner of the basement with boxes haphazardly piled up to the ceiling.

@benteh

That's not an adult thing at all.

Everybody knows that children's and cat's favourite playthings and places to be are ...

Cardboard boxes.

@benteh Having a cat means you have an excuse to keep boxes, it’s for the cat, don’t you see how happy she is sitting there??
@benteh So very true! And then of course talk yourself into keeping that box, regardless of however many you already have. Because "we MIGHT need it!" To my shame I have to admit to a bit of a Pavlovian reflex.
It goes: Good box. Must keep!
And so many other things...
😳
@benteh I love when I get a gift in a beautiful sturdy multi-purpose cardboard box. Sometimes the box is better than the contents.
@benteh I just got rid of one this morning that had been knocking around for a year because it was a really, really good box.

@benteh

I think one term that could be used would be hoarding.

But. I was hanging on to empty cardboard boxes but now I've been burning them.

I'm trying to declutter my house.

But you're right the committee in my head πŸ—£οΈ is always arguing as to what to keep and what not to keep.

@MissingThePt

@benteh

I have purchased moving boxes. I know how much they cost. We're *keeping* *these*.

@benteh is there a reason to debate? there is just one right answer for that! (if it's a good one, keep and reuse)
@benteh I have a stash of them. Gonna use one to mail out a laptop come March or April.
@ellenor @benteh Yeah, boxes are great. Unfold them, tie them up with some twine & you can keep a large stash around without taking too much space.
@benteh the piece of string. Box from every apple product you’ve purchased, boxes from RING products too. Velcro strip off lettuce. HAGD all.

@benteh

Pretty sure I was already a fan of good cardboard boxes as a kid :-)

@benteh me hoarding all the boxes so when I need to ship something I have a perfect box to put things into. My dad tends to disagree with my methods and we butt head over this quite a bit...
@benteh Oh I see you've met my husband, Chair of the But It's A Really Good Box committee.
@benteh if it doesn't match the dimensions of the stack I'm already keeping that bastard is GONE
@benteh I also have this issue with jars!
@benteh I don't debate, I just keep! πŸ˜‚
@benteh
I am so glad to learn I am not alone in my love of repurposing a good sturdy cardboard box.
@benteh Look, it's a really unusual form factor and one day I'm going to have the exact thingy that needs to be in a box this exact shape, and anyway I don't need to justify myself
@benteh one of the boxes is full of the bubble wrap you're saving.
@benteh Did you know that one instance of Milano cookies comes in a plastic lidded cube about 8" on a side? Can you imagine thst some people throw those away?!?!?
@benteh I'll help you throw it out faster: cardboard is a gateway for cockroaches.
@djisin415 they're not a problem here. cardboardboxhoarding a much more pressing issue
@benteh There is something to this.
@benteh And you don't even have a cat to blame it on.

@benteh
Realised this morning that I don't know a really really good cardboard box from a bitter disappointment.

I'm over carboard boxes!

@skua πŸ˜† you have much to learn
@benteh And in addition to other reasons for keeping it I ask the question, "does my cat like this box?"
@benteh I don't, though my wife would really like me to dispose of the dozens of carefully folded cardboard boxes of various sizes i stored in my messy "home office", in case they ever come handy, because they are indeed, for most of them, very good boxes.
