With so many great Mastodon intro guides out there, is there one that is the best?

Well... now there is!

@Em0nM4stodon 's guide is pretty much perfect. If you could only have one guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse, this is it.

Control Alt Delete Blog: The Mastodon’s Guide to the Fediverse >>> https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html

Clean, concise, comprehensive and beautifully produced. Just great work!

The Mastodon’s Guide to the Fediverse (starting with Mastodon step-by-step!)

A simple blog about privacy, security, open source, software engineering, and tech in general.

@mastodonmigration @Em0nM4stodon mastodon is really good and all, file loads failing, missing federated app view hold it back. The next one, it's got to have federated views, but with the nice community appeal of the best of twitter, Reddit, Tumblr, YouTube, insta, all running their own little fun networks. As is, we've like... 65% there maybe. And in the process, everything else is a total dumpster fire. I left Twitter when $cience started trending. I'm out there, but those folks are mental...

I disagree, this is clearly not the best guide.

There's a huge section on images and not even an external link to how to do alt-text, let alone mentioning the "friction" you will, rightly, encounter by posting lots of images without alt-text.

The Mastodon desktop client will do the bulk, if not all the alt-text for you.

"Post images like a pro" indeed.

It seems to me it explains how to do alt-text pretty well in this section no? https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html#9-3-alt-text

And also it explains that people might not boost your posts if they have no alt-text here: https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html#9-5-pictures

Overall I think it strikes the right balance, being quite complete but not overwhelming!

Ah yes, the technical instruction manual.

It appears at first glance to be very information complete which makes it a great guide to Mastodon for computer programmers who, of course, are the only people on Mastodon.

I mean I, personally, like what I've seen and would find it useful. I don't know anyone socially that I could show it too who would also find it useful.

@Homebrewandhacking

Why do you think they wouldn’t find it useful? I think the “steps”organization is great! It starts from the very simple basics, people can stop anytime if they’ve had too much, or keep reading if they want to go into more details. So it’s not overwhelming but it has complete and accurate information…
I’d say it’s one of the best guides I’ve read so far! But am certainly interested in any other ones that you think are better!

I don't have anything better.

Honestly, you'll have to take my word for it. For hacker types, good times. But I don't think it's great for Twitter migrants.

I think the writing style is good, but it needs pictures and better layout.

I write technical manuals on game design disguised as RPG source books and the layout let's me get away with it.

Hmmm... don't really see how The Mastodon’s Guide to the Fediverse is too technical. Seems well organized, simple and clear, but not everything is for everyone.

Perhaps you would prefer this other great guide targeted specifically at non-technical users:

The Tamagotchi was the coolest invention around the year that I first started to use the Internet. It was the most basic level of Internet usage, just using my dad’s giant desktop computer to poke…

You may be confusing the guide referenced in the post:

Control Alt Delete Blog: The Mastodon’s Guide to the Fediverse >>> https://controlaltdelete.technology/articles/the-mastodons-guide-to-the-fediverse.html

...with the Mastodon Migration omnibus linked at the bottom:

The later is certainly not a great guide, more of a reference, but you're right alt-text should be mentioned, even if it is not the subject of the image posting bit.

@mastodonmigration @Em0nM4stodon

Oh yes, it's the Mastodon migration omnibus which doesn't talk about it.

@mastodonmigration @Em0nM4stodon This is really good indeed! Super clear and well-written, love the different steps. Thank you for sharing!

I also didn’t know you could do this:

You can browse the Local timelines of instances that aren't yours generally by adding the suffix /public/local after an instance’s name in the address bar of a browser

@mastodonmigration @Em0nM4stodon lots of happy words in this doc! My favorite, used when a key feature is missing: "There is no recommendation algorithm on Mastodon (which is a good thing actually)."
Four months into Mastodon, I've learned to laugh instead of cry. 😆
@mastodonmigration @Em0nM4stodon I'm delighted that it doesn't say "For Dummies". What an offending insult to learning.
