Today on Techdirt I wrote about two newly proposed state laws, one from the Texas GOP and one from the Florida GOP, both of which are blatantly, laughably unconstitutional attacks on free speech and the first amendment in pursuit of culture war nonsense. But never let the GOP claim that they support the 1st Amendment when they constantly pull shit like this.

Another Day, Another Blatant Attack On The 1st Amendment From The Florida GOP

I keep hearing people pretend that the GOP in general, and Florida GOPers more specifically, and Governor Ron DeSantis most specifically, are fighting for “free speech,” when they conti…

LMAO, reminds me of another country I know

@mmasnick this seems to be part of a larger strategy to flood the zone with other similarly crazy bills.

It's resulting in a lot of foaming at the mouth and people from outside of Florida insulting Floridians, and is fomenting an us vs them thinking.

@soflaadmin @mmasnick My sister and her boyfriend live in Miami. They know how horrible it is there.
@mmasnick If their intent wasn’t so horrifying it might be funny. Hopefully history doesn’t repeat itself.
@mmasnick
Only the 2nd matters. All other amendments, even the Consitution and Bill of Rights, are on the block.
@mmasnick I think what concerns me is that it doesn't matter if they're unconstitutional; they're banking on the Supreme Court DECLARING them constitutional; I believe De Santis was even saying he's "confident this Court will back him" or something to that effect? They've effectively rigged the system enough to pull shit like this and have a fighting chance of getting away with it. THAT scares me.
@TheMagicLemur @mmasnick If that happened with these laws, it would be a go-flag for civil disobedience with a base of public support. I don't think the federal system would be sustainable with laws like these on the books. The aspiring oligarchs funding the show want everyone hating one another, but not that much.
@TheMagicLemur @mmasnick I wouldn't worry. The possibility for reciprocal mischief is too great.
@mmasnick I hate to say this, but if this BS is allowed to keep going, the "United" States, is in for civil war.
@mmasnick Why bother pointing out that their actions are hypocritical and contradictory? It is well established, and they do not care. They only care about obtaining power and keeping it and have no sense of commitment to their duty to serve and govern.
@grandmaBates because calling out bullshit is how you make sure it is not normalized. The cynical "it does not matter, you can't do anything" response helps them.
@mmasnick they just focus on the 2 nd amendment 😑

@mmasnick I wonder how the Texans look at this.

GOP want zero abortions. If that happens and an extra 20,000 kids are born and go into state care, does that then facilitate religious leaders and legislators having access to children (not their own for a change), to sate their perverse desires by renting out kids from state care to themselves, their friends and their colleagues? By the day or hour or for a weekend with the good ol boys for example?

Is that the end game?

@mmasnick

I wonder why people let this shit go on. I'd like to see a LAW that says if a legislator files legislation that can't pass constitutional muster, that legislator is AUTOMATICALLY removed from office and prohibited from running for office ever again.

Such people should also be criminally liable. The US has (the 'good people of the US' have) no more time for this abuse of process and authority.

@mmasnick dude, how many ulcers do you have from covering this crap? My god I would be certifiably insane by now from covering this much of the worst humans ever show. If I were in your shoes and living in as overly litigious a country as yours, I would’ve bankrupted the entire Republican establishment, Fox News and the entire cabal of agitprop hyenas. Several times over.
@mmasnick I sometimes refer to this as "legislative shitposting." If it wasn't so dangerous, it would be hilarious.
