BBC News - Tesco and Aldi limit sales of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64729317

Dear @BBC , there hasn't been any 'extreme weather' in the south of Spain. I know, I live there, and our shops are full of tomatoes, lettuces, peppers, and all other fruit and veg. As of course are the shops in Germany, France, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Sweden ....... Strange, it was meant to be the UK that "took back control". #Brexit #BrexitDisaster

Tesco and Aldi limit sales of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers

The grocers join Asda and Morrisons in limiting sales due to shortages of certain produce.

BBC News
@mabilica @BBC but there has been in Morocco where the U.K. increasingly gets such foodstuffs during the winter
@lassielmr @mabilica @BBC
On Monday Asda had tomatoes from Morocco on sale for 60p, I bought some. Photo to follow, if necessary.
@lassielmr @mabilica @BBC Yeah, but why is it getting them more in Morocco?

@mabilica @BBC glad to hear that it's not the weather... coz I was wondering why the shops in Ireland were fine but the ones on Brexit Island next door were not fine.

What could it possibly be 🤔

@Cbfoley @mabilica @BBC Prevailing wind? Here in Ireland it is off the Atlantic. In the UK, it arrives from a journey across Europe....

@mabilica @BBC

Imagine if the soviet system had produced supply chain interruptions like this. Instead of presenting news of shortages as a “public information service”, the western press would have shown pictures of empty shelves and blame “the system” 🤔

Thankfully, the UK still runs on the “I’m all right, Jack” system favoured by Friedman, Reagan and Thatcher.

Shortages are therefore only happening in the UK because of “the weather” (i.e. God) in “other countries” (i.e. God doesn’t like THEM…)

@mabilica @BBC a picture I took today in a Swiss supermarket and sent to a mate of mine in GB asking him if I need to send a care package.
@madalex @mabilica @BBC care package will get stuck in customs for a few weeks, sadly...
@patrick_h_lauke @madalex @mabilica @BBC Exactly, no CARE packages for the sunny BrExit lands.
@mabilica @BBC interesting, here in the Netherlands the supermarkets do have issues getting tomatoes, cauliflower, pepers and other vegetables grown in Spain.
So there's definitely an effect of the weather impacting exports
@mabilica @BBC No shortages in central America either. Lol. What an EU created issue with all their stupid sanctions.
@mabilica @BBC @cstross Since I read the article, I learned that cold weather in Jan/Feb after an unseasonably warm December fucked up all of their production targets and the pricing of produce in all the countries you listed above are sky high.

@mabilica
"There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that the European continental retailers are probably getting a bigger share than the UK," he said.

Retailers in the UK tend to buy fruit and veg on a longer-term model, paying a price for the year, whereas many European countries use shorter-term models, which buy on a "month to month basis", he said.

@mabilica @BBC or, anyway, even if there was shome shortage in fruits coming from Italy, Spain and North Africa, the fact tha UK locked itself in wont help to deal with that.
@mabilica
WOW so everyone outside of the UK is calling out @BBC and government officials for this FLAT OUT #LIE.
Has the #BBC been bought out by the Daily Mail?
@mabilica @BBC perhaps they're taking things all the way back to the days when Brittania Ruled the Waves, and Scurvy Ruled the Sailors.
@mabilica @BBC Odd as there is shortages in Sweden of the same things.
@mabilica @BBC not sure about Spain, but here in Italy last year the price of produce has risen a bit, some varieties weren't available and the ones that were weren't as good as other years, thanks to extreme weather (drought or floods, depending on the part of Italy).

One thing that didn't happen were empty shops, however.
@mabilica @BBC Another Brexit failure
