@CatherineMunro I think it’s interesting you call them kindling. To me, kindling is made up of slender pieces of firewood. I would call birchbark tinder. When I build a fire, tinder lights the kindling and kindling lights the firewood. I wonder if this is a regional difference. I’m in Canada.
@Shanmonster yes . I use kindling really for what all the starting stuff is, I think because that's what folk around me said and I am used to saying it. You are right that the correct terms would be tinder for starter,. Kindling for small sticks and firewood for the rest. I guess I just wrote it before thinking through the words .
