The tide brought treasure. Tiny sculptures telling stories of distant trees. Known as Loki's candles, these pieces of birch bark have crossed the Atlantic to reach Shetland's shores and have traditionally been used for kindling #Shetland #Scotland #beachcombing
@CatherineMunro I guess there's a reason why birchbark canoes exist in North America.
@CatherineMunro
The best kindling.
@returntosender I tried them for the first time tonight and it was the perfect firelighter. An amazing smell
@CatherineMunro Fascinating. Learned something new today!
@CatherineMunro We find similar on the beaches in Vancouver washed down the mighty Fraser River from the vast Birch forests of BC's interior.
@CatherineMunro I think it’s interesting you call them kindling. To me, kindling is made up of slender pieces of firewood. I would call birchbark tinder. When I build a fire, tinder lights the kindling and kindling lights the firewood. I wonder if this is a regional difference. I’m in Canada.
@Shanmonster yes . I use kindling really for what all the starting stuff is, I think because that's what folk around me said and I am used to saying it. You are right that the correct terms would be tinder for starter,. Kindling for small sticks and firewood for the rest. I guess I just wrote it before thinking through the words .
