Just a reminder that using "the children" and their need for "protection" has been the basis of every horrific moral panic targeting a marginalized group.
@parkermolloy they always use children since they can use say you want to hurt kids if you disagree, I hate this strat and I find stupid dems still use it pass the worst internet legislation imaginable
@parkermolloy But no need to protect them from school gun violence. Great "morals" by this kkklan. Ugh.

@parkermolloy

Yep! And now...

"The trans panic is about parents not being able to recognize their children as independent, autonomous beings. Panicked parents would rather use the coercive power of institutions in society to control not only their own children but society as a whole, in the name of the child they have silenced."

@parkermolloy I spent a fair amount of time yesterday evening thinking about the "we need to protect children" rhetoric, while holding a candle in honour of a trans child who was murdered a few days earlier.
@parkermolloy
this is the same country that can fit thirty grams of sugar in fourteen grams of frosted flakes in a physics-defying feat of capitalism
@parkermolloy
my numbers are junk but so's that complete breakfast
@parkermolloy I do wonder what these people are doing to protect children from the pandemic that's going to leave them disabled and cut their life expectancy by 20 years...
@elmyra @parkermolloy Every day this fucking destroys me.
@parkermolloy 14 words, white supremacy. Moral panics deliberately smearing gay people as sexual predators. The great firewall of china’s justification was “to protect children from porn and sexual exploitation” (but wound up just being another tool of control).
Id say that dangerous radicals with dark motivations love to use children as an excuse because they hope that parental/protective instinct will cloud the judgement of their audience and justify implementation of unpopular action

@parkermolloy Indeed. Every authoritarian purge, all the way back to Socrates "crime" of corrupting the young, has had "won't someone think of the children" style pearl clutching as a keystone.

@parkermolloy it's been the go-to for so long that it's a mainstay running gag on the simpsons
@parkermolloy don’t forget the corollary that any law with a person’s name in its title is likely to be a badly written law.
@parkermolloy yesss the argument in NL that is pro Zwarte Piet (Krampus as a blackface "elf") is even worse in which it is not "think of the kids" but "kids won't notice the racism so it's ok" entirely ignoring there are black/brown kuds

@parkermolloy And using children has human shields is the go to move for the radical right in more ways than one, (Waco and the Bundy Ranch come to mind).
@parkermolloy Also for the benefit of #MattGaetz... he may *always* be thinking of the children...
@parkermolloy Right back to the Roman period at the least
