My almost 13 year old daughter had a good idea. We’ve been talking about doing a podcast together - mostly for us to have.

Her idea was reviewing books that are being taken out of school libraries - discussing the content, reviewing the actual literature but also the reasons it was banned and our thoughts there as well.

This is something I think that we will do, soon.

@bleakfuture

Fantastic idea! Please keep us up to date with progress on this.

@bleakfuture That is an EXCELLENT idea. I'd listen!
@bleakfuture NGL, I'd listen to this and I can barely process spoken words in podcasts. It's that compelling.
@aredridel thank you for the encouragement!

@bleakfuture That sounds amazing! I've started listening to audiobooks of the banned books (right now I'm on Looking for Alaska), but they got so many, so fast that it seems like an impossible job now to get trough them all.

But still worth it with the once I do get trough. Not all of them are great literature, but some really are good, and all give me a creepy view into the minds of those who ban them. @cstross

@forteller @cstross yeah I think the exploration of the books and why they were banned will really be important as well as a best guess on the thinking behind banning them.

It will be fun to research.

@bleakfuture @forteller @cstross I don't know if trying to get into the sick minds of people who want to ban all the books that normalize real life of people of color and people who might not align with strict gender expectations is the way to go - especially with a young teen.

Talking about what makes the books worth reading and celebrating the authors' work will take a lot of effort.

@bleakfuture I love this idea (while obviously also wishing this didn't have to be a thing).
@bleakfuture Is there like a Nobel Prize in Parenting? Because this would definitely be a contender! Excellent, excellent work!
@davealvarado lol I appreciate it. I’m sure there’s a hell of a lot more suitable candidates. That’s super kind of you though.
@bleakfuture let us know as soon as it is posted and I'll boost on several other sites! GREAT IDEA!
@bleakfuture love it. My stepmother was the President of the American Library association and is well connected. I’d like to send this to her when you are ready. Let me know ok?
@robinbrenizer absolutely! That woilr be fantastic.
@bleakfuture ok send me a link when you feel it’s ready 🥳
@bleakfuture your daughter is very bright..please share podcasts title
@Jimmyjimjim as soon as we have one! This idea is about 16 hours old. Working through some logistics!
@bleakfuture Ali Velshi of Msnbc runs a banned book club you should reach out to him on your podcast
@JaneETowle absolutely! What a great idea!
@bleakfuture Please do & let us know where to find it🙏
@bleakfuture YASS!! I'd listen to that. There are so many books and I can't read them all.
@bleakfuture To broaden the reach, I Ssuggest having a guest student(s) to join in each week. It's avfewat idea! Also CONTACT publishers, ask for 5-10 coôies of book for a promotional giveaway each week. Both podcast and book giveaway can be oromoted via simple website. News signup so you can promote it all.

@KarenStrickholm these are fantastic ideas - maybe we can find students who represent the things the bans are marginalizing - lgbt, racial or ethnic minority, etc

This could honestly really be amazing.

@bleakfuture @KarenStrickholm

Disability. Abuse survivors. Mental health, depression and suicide. Kid athiests. Gay-Straight Alliances

All of these things have spawned moral panics during my lifetime.

Our Bodies, Our Selves should be in every home library.

@graphictruth @bleakfuture GREAT suggestion! Also climate change. Guns. Role of tech. I would love to know what these kids think!

@bleakfuture Absolutely. I think it's brilliant. Get a big "name" for opening segment. Gives youu a promotional hook. Also structure so ppl will not only like but subscribe. Make that super-easy. You want to convert your one-time listeners-watchers into regulars. I'm former or and marketing. If you want to knock around some ideas let me know... [email protected] Best of luck, great project!

PS: Consider a VLOG.

@bleakfuture Like maybe that trans reality TV star Jazz.
@bleakfuture You could Get all kinds of experts too, like a prof of lit a librarian etc
@KarenStrickholm for sure - experts in the fields the book tackles - really the options are endless.

@bleakfuture one more thing, consider flipping it around, by taking on a different hot topic each week, then at last segment put the spotlight on "Three Banned Books About xyxz". That gives you another promotional hook.

Once you figure out what it is also do a video promo/intro. That will help in sooo many ways

@bleakfuture go for it. If you can get other people to do the same then do so as well. I'll try to do the same from my end. Best of luck to you
@bleakfuture This is a great idea, esp. coming from a 13 y/o. You should totally do that and help to found the next generation of guardians of public knowledge and free education. 📚📕📖

@bleakfuture This is a brilliant idea! I'd love to listen to/discuss this with my teenage daughters.

#bookbanning #Books #podcasts

@bleakfuture
This sounds like an awesome idea! I'd love to know when it comes to fruition.

Good luck to the both of you in this endeavor.

@aBirdieOnaWire sorry for the double follow - I requested then unrequested to read your pinned post - now requested again 🫥

I will make sure to let you know

@bleakfuture Excellent idea. Might even get me to give listening to podcasts another shot :)
@bleakfuture Why would books be banned in the first place.
@tiredoftrumpstuff this is the question we’re looking to answer (hint: I don’t think we’ll find the answer, because there isn’t much reason to ever do that)
