Book Industry Coalition In Opposition Of The Federal Book Banning Effort
National Library Week April 19=25, 2026 Publishers, authors, booksellers, librarians, parent groups, and literary organizations—including PW—have collectively signed a statement against House Resolution 7661, a proposed book banning legislation known as the Stop the Sexualization of Children Act, introduced by its sponsors.HR 7661 aims to modify the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to prevent federal education funds from being allocated to public classrooms and school […]Penguin Random House Urges U.S. Congress to Reject Republican Book Banning Bill
"The bill creates strong incentives for schools to remove or avoid a wide range of books and materials," wrote PRH SVP Skip Dye in a letter to lawmakers, adding that, if passed, the law would also force educators and librarians to self-censor, resulting in "further marginalization of vulnerable communities.”

“The wording of the bill proposes giving an inspector appointed by the ministry the broad power to look at “any matter relating to the management, administration or operation of a public library,” and have access to records they deem relevant. It then would give the minister the authority to make “any order that the minister considers appropriate.”
Apologies - I’m out of articles to gift.
They didn’t come with matches
Didn’t come red-faced
Didn’t pound the table
Like men in old stories
Who wanted the world smaller by force
No, this was cleaner than that...

A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle
Someone sent me a clipping from a daily newspaper containing a list of ten books to be removed from library shelves because of their pornographic content. On the list was one of C. S. Lewis’s Narnia books. Also on the list was my book A Wind in the Door. I am totally baffled and frankly fascinated. This is the first time C. S. Lewis and I have been listed together as writers of pornography. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007) American writer
Speech (1983-11-16), “Dare To Be Creative,” Lecture, Library of Congress, Washington, DC

From a few weeks ago, but worth another look, considering that we’re moving on to moving out books from the public libraries in #Alberta.
“Attention, government of Alberta, do you know what students can access on their phones?”
Back home to #Alberta greeted with the latest #bookbanning efforts by the #UCP , this time in public #libraries Hello!!! Margaret Atwood and others. Alberta is calling. HELP! Oh, sorry, not ‘banned’, just wrapped in brown paper and kept under the counter.
A quotation from Madeleine L'Engle
I am very wary of those individuals who are neither writers nor editors nor even, in some cases, readers, who feel that they have the right to apply their own moral criteria to the books in public and school libraries. I have enormous respect and admiration and love for the librarians who are rising up to protest this, because they are putting their very jobs on the line.Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007) American writer
