I keep wondering at what point Big Journalism will awaken to the threat(s) posed by DeSantis, who is a Trump-like power-monger but with more brains.

As Nieman Lab reports, his anti-journalism agenda is deeper and more dangerous, too.

But you can count on the NY Times et al to focus on everything but the danger he poses to democracy. Business as usual political "coverage" prevail for the most part.

So much as stake, and so little media awareness...

Ron DeSantis is weaponizing partisan media — and weakening independent sources of news

"Part of what makes DeSantis different is how he has paired his efforts to elevate partisan media with public policies meant to destabilize independent media."

@dangillmor Reporting on what he’s doing without editorializing is much less dangerous than just turning into the Huffington Post which is what sone people seem to expect.
@dangillmor corporate media expected only to chase money at this point
@dangillmor @johnglass This. We need to stop hoping for the big expose to ride in on a white horse and save us.
@dangillmor NPR has been covering him in a surprisingly positive light.
@objectinspace @dangillmor Too many in the media didn't like Trump because he said the quiet bit out loud and had no respect for norms, not because of his policy positions. It's why someone like this can come along and do what DeSantis does. He is significantly cleverer than Trump and he's very affective at campaigning and getting things done. It's why I feel he is significantly more dangerous than Trump.
@Matt02392 @dangillmor Yes and what strikes me is that they see this as an advantage, they want him to beat Trump so they are happy to do him the solid of platforming him as the reasonable Trump alternative, so he doesn't have to take the shot at Trump directly which is exactly what he wants. Nikki Haley will not get this treatment, she will be expected to hit him and be hit back for it.
@objectinspace @dangillmor And yet, Republicans will tell you with a straight face, every day, about how NPR is the leftiest left thing in the world.
@arush @objectinspace @dangillmor NPR is like the BBC. Left-wing people over here think the BBC is super right-wing. Right-wing people think it’s mad left-wing. Essentially it is socially liberal but in favour of pretty much the status quo. It’s a socially liberal centrist.
@dangillmor I fear that they are in fear of him. After all, they feared Trump too and DeSantis is much more dangerous.
@dangillmor Never, dictators sell newspapers, for a while.

@dangillmor

Replace “face eating leopard” with “journalism killing fascist”

NY Times and others think he’s only going after other journalists and he wouldn’t do anything to them.

Ahem.

@dangillmor that quote about a person not understanding something if their paycheck depends upon it
@dangillmor Big journalism does the bidding of the rich corporate world. That world has congress sewn up so Trump can only provide cover for more crony capitalism. Why would it route around that?
@dangillmor he's stupid don't praise him
@brooklynmarie @dangillmor I often wonder how German media acted, reacted and what it ignored when it came to the crimes Hitler and his minions were committing.
THE ART OF PROPAGANDA -- By Adolf Hitler

@dangillmor Florida wants to leave America
@dangillmor never. NYT was assuring readers that Mr. Hitler was sure to moderate under pressures of the Chancellors office as late as 1932, so that ship has sailed, been refused entry and has taken its passengers back to get murdered.
@dangillmor I mean let's be real, they didn't talk about the obvious danger Trump posed for four years, until after his failed coup. They're cowards who allow only the most cluelessly naive takes to be heard.
