Watching Twitter fail into nothingness is like watching an old friend slowly lose their mental capacites. It hurts, this friend had some problems, but they helped spread the word about artists, independent journalists, mom and pop shops... Now they just sit in their recliner in the dark, wondering why their friends don't call anymore.
@graygoogirl
Trump and Musk seem to be losing touch with reality at the same pace.
@jeber @graygoogirl they never were in touch with reality. They lived in worlds created by marketing.
@graygoogirl
I realized Twitter was never my friend, specially these last years in which it became so toxic and wasted my time.
@graygoogirl I feel the same way when I see what #wikipedia has become.
@Kumioko @graygoogirl What has Wikipedia become? :(
@gideonmarcus @graygoogirl in a word? A disgrace! It's unreliable and biased. The community is hostile and toxic and the @wikimedia foundation that runs it is selfish and incompetent. #wikipediasucks
@Kumioko @graygoogirl That makes me sad. I know a lot of folks who are doing good work. Where in particular are you seeing issues? (I spend most of my time in spaceflight: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Neopeius)
User:Neopeius - Wikipedia

@gideonmarcus @graygoogirl for starters, I used to be a top editor and created hundreds of articles including some featured until a few abusive admins lied and violated policy to bully me out because I was improving Wikiproject united states and advocating the admins should have to follow the same rules as editors instead of be held to a lower standard.
@gideonmarcus @graygoogirl now, as you can imagine, I don't hold wikipedia or its so called community of lying cultists in high regard.
@graygoogirl
This is the best description I've heard yet, also the saddest

@graygoogirl

> Watching #Twitter fail into nothingness is like ..

Sorry to put this in a different way but:
It feels like one of your (our) worst enemys is falling apart, and besides the fact that lot's of people "feel hurt" and get hurt, like we did before when we had to leave that place, it's like "now you see!".

@jeffjarvis
@mmasnick
#twitter #fediVerse #mastodon

@graygoogirl sometimea I think it's more like watching a friend losing their mental faculties...and slowly listening more and more to that one racist transphobe who lives in the building...until they believe those lies so deploy they spread only hate where once they also spread knowledge and tolerance.
@graygoogirl I guess... My point of view is more that Twitter started that way, but long sense became a toxic friend that won't be missed.
@graygoogirl I’m just kinda tired of the lionization of Twitter, it was a harmful site that actively aided in the persecution of minorities before Musk took over, it’s just now it’s the main mission instead of simply a side hustle. People who benefited from it did so *in spite of that* and because of a lack of alternatives.
@graygoogirl I had a bad feeling about Musk from the start: Maybe because he looked funny. After acquiring the company and then ship wrecking it on purpose he thought he could derail “American Thought”. His intended confusion, and disorder has unified communication and inoculated speech in general.
@graygoogirl it's been a toxic sludge for over 6 or so years now. more noise than signal. I'm not sorry to see it fall apart.

@graygoogirl Or perhaps that friend has already died, and the reanimated zombie that they became does not remember anything from their past, nor any old friends, and can't do anything than endanger everybody around them.

Continuing with the zombie trope and metaphor, it is still a difficult decision to shoot this zombie in the head, but it's the merciful thing to do.

@graygoogirl I always thought twitter kinda sucked, but it is worse now so I have even less reason to use it all that much.
@graygoogirl a slightly different take on your analogy - the good parts of Twitter were not Twitter itself (the name, logo, headquarters), it was the community that developed around it through conversations on Twitter. That community can move on to a new home and those conversations can continue. The old friend who loses their capacities is trapped inside a failing shell they cannot escape (stupid 21st century medicine) - this is different, unless you mostly just liked the name “Twitter”.
@graygoogirl are you suggesting that people just watch someone lose their mental capacities?
Poor analogy
@graygoogirl God, that hits a bit too hard. Grandma went the same way, just wasting away.
@graygoogirl more like watching a beloved older relative become a MAGA Trumpist who watches Fox News all day and reveals their previously hidden but always below the surface casual racism
