On this day two years ago, Perseverance and Ingenuity landed on Mars. And #curl helped it happen: https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2021/04/19/mars-2020-helicopter-contributor/

It gave me the opportunity to make what is still one of my all time favorite #curl graphs.

Mars 2020 Helicopter Contributor

Friends of mine know that I've tried for a long time to get confirmation that curl is used in space. We've believed it to be likely but I've wanted to get a clear confirmation that this is indeed the fact. Today GitHub posted their article about open source in the Mars mission, and they now … Continue reading Mars 2020 Helicopter Contributor β†’

@bagder The number of ( curl users / planet inhabitant ) is quite NaN on mars.
@lord I stopped counting "users" a long time ago and I try to talk about "installations" these days. Because curl (libcurl really) are often so hard to tie to "users".

@bagder

That's actually fairly cool.
Nice! πŸ™‚πŸ‘

@bagder when you ship a new release, do you think it eventually makes its way there? Or is it more like a closed box solution that doesn't get updates?
@vincentbiret I would guess on the lattter, but I have no insights at all...

@bagder Reminds me of the checklist on @brettcannon's GitHub README :)

@hugovk @brettcannon just awesome!
@bagder @hugovk I just wished I could automate the list somehow (it's the one thing on my GitHub README I have to manually keep up-to-date)😁
@brettcannon @bagder A new field in pyproject.toml? New Trove classifiers?
@bagder This joke falls totally flat for those many of us who have no idea what curl is.
@kiffr it's not a joke
@bagder Which demonstrates my point perfectly.
If my life depended on knowing what this toot even meant, I’d be flat out on the floor by now.
@kiffr I still don't understand your point. Nobody can ever assume the audience knows anything so we must always explain everything from the beginning?
@bagder It was really intended as a joke … a dig at computery people who have a tendency to assume everyone on the planet is computer literate. Those of us in our seventies may not be. Tho I do own an Apple Mac I admit.Don’t know much about I.T. though. I dislike a modern habit of implying β€œwe all know….” (whatever),worse, a tendency to assume common understanding of things which is not there for some of us. I’m educated to a very high standard but increasingly out of my depth.
@bagder Yes, probably. If it’s a general toot rather than a specificity. I was really trying to raise a laugh in my capacity as an old fart.
