Platformer is reporting Twitter is about to remove two factor with for everyone, unless they pay Elon $8/11 a month.

Beyond crazy on a service that rife with fraud to make basic infosec a luxury. 🤡💩

@briannawu How do we get Stephen King to write a tweet and get that price down?
@briannawu If anyone still needs a reason to ditch Twitter, this should be it...
@briannawu The only thing I hear Elon telling me, over and over, is to get off Twitter.
@briannawu so glad I left it, do not miss it

@briannawu

why doesn't he just start a bidding war between billionaires, companies and governments to give them total control over the algorithm? most users and journalists would probably find some bullshit excuse to stick around.

@briannawu I don't see any article from them mentioning that
@briannawu This will definitely attract advertisers back to the platform.
@briannawu The second factor of Twitter’s new 2FA is liking one of Elon’s tweets.
@briannawu
And when you sign up, Elon will send you your password, in plaintext.
@briannawu It looks like you'll still be able to use time-based 2FA (authenticator app). But for a lot of people, that will probably be the same as not having 2FA at all.
@briannawu People are so gonna riot if this is true
@briannawu That would be crazy pants.
@briannawu beyond crazy is kinda of their brand.
@briannawu Absolutely not. There’s no way I’ll pay that.
@briannawu I'm *fairly* sure that attempting this would violate some GDPR guidelines in a few countries, since those tend to demand using modern security standards to secure user data and "just a password" isn't cutting it.

not that Musk seems to have much respect for the law to begin with.

@briannawu March 2023: Platformer is reporting Twitter is about to limit the ability to login, unless they pay Elon $8/11 a month.

Beyond crazy on a service that fewer poeple want to use anyways. 🤡💩

@briannawu Just a burning circus over there. I swear they're looking for the limit
@briannawu just head on over there and play whack a bot
@briannawu time to close my account for good then. I’ve not been on Twitter for a while anyway. Happy to toot instead.
@briannawu They are only taking away SMS based authentication, forcing people to switch to a physical key or authentication app. https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/product/2023/an-update-on-two-factor-authentication-using-sms-on-twitter
An update on two-factor authentication using SMS on Twitter

An update on two-factor authentication using SMS on Twitter

@briannawu They're charging for inferior SMS 2FA. More secure app and security key 2FA is still available for free. It's pretty absurd of them.
@briannawu that "update" hasn't reached me yet. But the moment it does, I will delete my Twitter.

@briannawu while I've stopped using my account there, I've left it in place (for a few reasons). The removal of basic account security would remove any comfort with leaving the account there. It would be deleted immediately.

Which also means my old handle would be available after whatever T's cooling down period is, which also makes me less than happy...

@briannawu Last I heard it was just the sms-based 2fa that they were paywalling

Are they paywalling TOTP and U2F (if they offer U2F idk never been on the birdsite ever) as well? If so, thats a blatant cash grab.

But I think this might quite possibly be blown out of proportion.
