“It feels cooler to say ‘I’m not woke!’ then the truth, which is ‘I’m terrified of what I don’t understand and I only know how to process that as anger because I can’t look inward.’ To wit!”

@MarkRuffalo Oh thank goodness, for a moment I thought Sarah Silverman had jumped on the Dave Chapelle train.
@MarkRuffalo not a huge fan of her, but she’s got a great point.

@RushGirl @MarkRuffalo
> woke
> willing to change your mind when new information becomes available

I'm sorry but this hypothesis is inconsistent with experience

@wolf480pl @RushGirl @MarkRuffalo That would be a you problem

@melanie @MarkRuffalo @RushGirl

Do you consider yourself woke?

@wolf480pl @MarkRuffalo @RushGirl The question as asked is a trap. I try to do what I can to become and remain aware of social injustices, including those at the origins of the word, which are those against African-Americans. A lot of people would scream "oh she's woke" before quote-tweeting me at their army of anime-avatar fash Pleromadons and telling them to harry me like I'm some kind of game animal or something.
@wolf480pl @MarkRuffalo @RushGirl "A lot of people" in this case specifically refers to a lot of people who, let's face it, look the same as I do.

@melanie @MarkRuffalo @RushGirl I do not doubt your awareness about injustices, social or otherwise.

Do you strive to embrace science, and to change your mind when shown new information?

@wolf480pl @melanie @MarkRuffalo

Absolutely. I'll give an example.

IF actual, for-real falsifiable evidence for christian creation was discovered that was undeniable and overwhelming I would accept it as true and throw evolution out the window.

But I seriously doubt that would ever happen.

@wolf480pl @melanie @MarkRuffalo

Absolutely.

And learning still, at 56.

@wolf480pl @MarkRuffalo

Not with my experience. I was fairly liberal until the second plane hit the second tower on 9/11, then I veered wildly to the right, where I stayed for the next decade.

Over time, I moved away from Fox "News" and far right conservatism as I've learned more. I'm now more liberal and "woke" than I was before 9/11.

So in my case it is true.

And I can admit when I get it wrong. Don't like it but I do it.

#WillingToLearnAndChange

@RushGirl @MarkRuffalo

That's good to hear.

That being said, I've seen people describing themselves as "woke" who refuse to consider the possibility that they're wrong, and instead try to silence anyone who disagrees with their dogma.

Generally, labels such as "woke" are vague and confusing, unless a group of people agrees on a specific meaning for the purpose of a particular conversation.

@wolf480pl @MarkRuffalo

The thing about 'woke' is, it's conservative RepubliQans who started using the word as another wedge, as an insult towards people like me who then simply embraced the term and went with it.

'Woke' has a specific meaning for me now. I bet it does for lots of people.

@MarkRuffalo
Yes! Sarah’s the perfect person to ask…
WTF’s the deal w/ the country’s obsession with a term 80% of them couldn’t define?
It’s nebulous & easily used as an ☂️for “whatever they’re afraid of”.

It’s a “catch all”…
It’s life the term “Fake News”.

@SusannaShakespeare @MarkRuffalo look, when the term you use to insult your enemies is one suggesting they're awake and paying attention as opposed to asleep and letting others do to them what they please, you gotta wonder if you're the one in the right

@bihazards @SusannaShakespeare @MarkRuffalo

Like when they think "liberal" is an insult. They aren't prepared when you own the label of "not a dick".

@SusannaShakespeare @MarkRuffalo it’s because they are using it as code for “black”.
@MarkRuffalo welcome to capitalism you Nazi bitches!
@MarkRuffalo but first we had to do a ageist Biden joke.
kind a negates what is an excellent observation.

@MarkRuffalo Those guest anchors (Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, etc.) have been fun to see on The Daily Show. I love Trevor Noah, but a fresh face is nice sometimes, and can pull off some of the jokes that might not work with Noah.

Also, the jokes are still good: "Gen Z kids are just like, 'Why would I go get shot in the middle east when I can get shot in the comfort of my middle school?'" Ouch. 😬

@MarkRuffalo
*Woke* is a word assholes have hijacked to make fun of people who are sympathetic to injustices in society, especially racism, sexism & poverty.
If you think having empathy is a bad thing, guess what? You may be an asshole.

@MarkRuffalo

yeah that whole bit was fantastic.

@MarkRuffalo
Woke like socialism are words they use to avoid saying what they think. Such as:
"Black Americans (not the word they would use) are to blame for their own disadvantages not the lasting societal and economic disadvantages caused by slavery and Jim Crow."
"I believe there is only men and women and do not want to acknowledge, hire, work with or live next door to LGBTQ Americans."
"My taxes should help me and people who think and look like me not go to "welfare" for "those people".
@MarkRuffalo To say you are not work is to say you are not awake and not aware. If you are proud of not being aware, I don't see how I can help you.
@MarkRuffalo I view wokeness as an opposing rhetoric to that of the far right. Treating the audience as ignorant and somehow lesser. Same Same.

@MarkRuffalo

Another great quote from this: “What I know woke to mean is like, learning new things about people or the world and then acting accordingly like basic kindness, maybe a gesture of care to people who are more vulnerable than you,” she said. “You know what? Actually you wouldn’t like it, it’s Jesus stuff.”

@MarkRuffalo
She's awesome! I hope she sticks around

@MarkRuffalo Henceforth and forever this will be known as Silverman's Law: "A person who says ‘to wit’ is usually a t-wat."
