On the one hand, yes it'd be nice to do an updated Polybius on PSVR2.

On the other hand... is everyone who already bought it on PSVR1 going to expect to get the PSVR2 version as a free upgrade?

@llamasoft_ox I did, and I don't. If that makes sense.
@llamasoft_ox Honestly it's a crying shame that Sony didn't provide some kind of backwards compatibility layer. I bought lots of games for PSVR which I'd love to be able to play without buying again for PSVR2. It'd boost sales for the new headset which is already a big ask considering it costs more than the console it runs on
@llamasoft_ox I think you'd be fine if you fiddled with effects/soundtrack/levels a bit and gave it some kind of special edition name ("Polybius: Flow"..?)
@llamasoft_ox Maybe, or maybe not... but probably after selling a kidney to buy the VR itself, they will not have much left heheheheheheh
@llamasoft_ox It's more a matter of how you communicate that it's not a free upgrade. Maybe the market sentiment is more towards expecting those free upgrades, but I I think it's something that can be affected with rather blunt messaging. I don't expect a free upgrade from indie devs, but Sony as the first party has a bigger incentive to get me onboard as someone who has put money into their VR offering.

@llamasoft_ox unless Sony is providing a subsidy to do the port I don't think you have an obligation to do so.

If it were financially viable, a discounted upgrade would be nice but if it's not going to pay for your time, I'm sure people will buy it again.

@llamasoft_ox I’d be happy to buy it again. Always happy to see llamasoft games on any platform.
@llamasoft_ox I’ll gladly pay for an upgrade. Got it before. Rather hoping Skyrim is appearing too, but I guess it might not. Likely keeping the old PSVR for that one.
@stever seems increasingly unlikely now that Microsoft owns them. Although they surprised me with Minecraft on PSVR
@llamasoft_ox I play this awesome game on PC from Steam. Thank you for it.. it's tough.. I love it! πŸ˜ƒ
@llamasoft_ox Nope, make em pay! PS5 and PSVR2 is a big investment. If someone has that coin, they can stump up for the new version!
@llamasoft_ox I will gladly pay again, that is one of my all time favorite VR games

@llamasoft_ox my primary operating principle is, as soon as I find out about a new llamasoft release for a thing I have, buy it immediately

If it’s for a thing I don’t, strongly consider buying that thing and then the llamasoft game immediately afterwards

@llamasoft_ox
It CANNOT be free ! You know HOW MUCH WORK is going to take me to basically re-do it "all new" and make PSVR2 work ? It's "not even close" to PSVR ! It's not an "upgrade" it's more a "remake" ! "Do they think 'portings' ( more a 'do it all new' ) happen in a snap ?" .. And thanks goat we did not need to pay for XXX or it'll be quite some money "just to get the stuff running!" .. I already spent "a bit" just to get all the system up 😎 There's no such thing as a free lunch.
@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox did you get a devkit, then? At least this is some insight into why there’s no backcompat if it’s all *that* different
@witewulf @llamasoft_ox
Yes I did and been told that "I have to make a native PS5 code", which means "all the PS4 thing goes out of the window". PSVR2 I don't have one yet ( will come ) first look at things I can't talk about ( NDA ) is like "wow ... " .. well it's the price to pay when you do something really new/better/different .. things change .. so I yet have to learn how everything works ..
@witewulf @llamasoft_ox
Also don't take me wrong I LOVE doing NEW stuff .. but IT TAKES TIME and work, it's not that it's just a "recompile/snap/all gone" it's NEVER EVER like that.
Also that gives me opportunities to fix bugs, nuisances, do some things better. Polybius is really "one of the most complex bits of code we done", it truly has "the full Neon upgraded engine" in, it synthesizes graphics and geometry and it's a bit of a mess πŸ˜… Everything is parametric except the cow πŸ˜ƒ ( partially )
@gilesgoat @witewulf @llamasoft_ox I will 100% buy Polybius again. For what it’s worth. I’d love to see Hover Bovver VR or Llamatron 3D or whatever sheepy new nonsense too. Just let me put my head in pixel joy again!
@Tanatoes @gilesgoat @witewulf funnily enough I was thinking about the thing I'm doing now and it occurred to me that it would actually be quite a suitable basis for levels of Hover Bovver or Llamatron.

@llamasoft_ox I think people would always like a free upgrade to the next generation, it builds a lot of good will from the community. That's especially useful when you launch your next game, people remember and they tell other people. But it's not expected.

For example the update to Rez is Β£10. I will buy it, I loved that game. I would for Polyibus too. If Polyibus used eye tracking or a different game mode, I'd probably buy it all over again.

@llamasoft_ox Some games that have free upgrade have paid for extra parts. Like Synth Riders has many song packs. Gives people an option to show support and but extra bits if they love the thing. Making extra content is an option. I don't know if that would be your cup of tea though.

I loved the music on Polyibus, wherever that came from I would love some more!

@llamasoft_ox maybe a small discount for us who bought the PSVR1 version? I'll gladly buy it again to get an enhanced experience <3
@llamasoft_ox
Whoever will talk about "JUST a port" or "JUST an upgrade" will receive a "Pappina Spaziale" from ME ! Obiviously whoever talks like that NEVER wrote a single line of code on a new gen console "from the metal". Some people "are too much used to think" that "tech someway JUST works and/or something/one makes it JUST work" .. it's the "JUST" that in reality is "MUCH BLOOD & TEARS" that "JUST" means THOUSANDS of man-hours/work/resources/expertise .. there's NO "JUST" ..
@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox I've had clients before who literally thought that if something already existed as a development, it must just be instantaneously available to any other development. I recall being asked to develop a video chat app with on the fly translation, and the client thinking this would be a breeze because both video calls and translation tools exist now. No consideration for the actual implementation, or infrastructural requirements. Just "that bit already exists" πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ
@dev_ric @llamasoft_ox
It's a bit like to say "lizards exist" "flamethrowers exists" "airplanes exists" -> "make me a flying firebreathing dragon". I had a boss "a bit like that" with his INfamous sentence "Ma che ci vuole ?" ( i.e. "What does it takes ?" ) The same that wanted N MS Exchange Servers all over the places and did NOT consider for 1 minute about "did you check about licensing costs ?" .. NO .. we'll think about it later .. oh hum ..

@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox ha. I've gotten out of many complex builds by pointing out there'd be license costs involved!

The problem with clients who think it's easy to just glue together existing mechanics, is that when you try to explain the difficulty and that it'll take x hours, at your hourly rate, they then switch to thinking you must be crap and that somebody else would do it easily. So you've to instead humour them and carefully steer the project in a more realistic direction.

@dev_ric @llamasoft_ox
There was sometime "a proactive culture" like "First let's do, then we'll think about it" that SOMETIME can work .. In that case he had the "idea" to use some MS something he had as "licensing" BUT .. it wasn't the correct one, in the end we stayed with 3 Exchange Servers and had to pay licensing in FULL at least he was very happy with that and made me take some trips to London to set all up πŸ˜„ In one of them I also met Flossie and Stinky_Ox so something good came out.
@gilesgoat @llamasoft_ox funny how things work out huh. I incorporated in 2013 because I was sick of working for others. 10 years on, we're still using contractors who I met and worked with while at other agencies, and working for clients who followed me from those agencies. We even do all of the dev and server admin for my last employer. My company only exists because I didn't want to work for other agencies any more, but is only able to exist because I worked for those agencies! #experiences
@llamasoft_ox I would certainly re-purchase it! Far and away my favorite VR game I’ve ever played
@llamasoft_ox I would absolutely buy a updated version for sure, but I'd need to buy the PS5 and the PSVR2 first, which may be some time away 🀣
@llamasoft_ox personally I would pay full price again for Polybius if it was on PSVR2. Max out the resolution and frame rate. nice
