Mettingen, Germany … dayum.

“An 88-year-old man died in Germany recently. He had a private library that no one knew about and he built all the furniture for the books himself.” - from the FB page BRICO ET DECO’

@BrianJopek

Here's more, even a video, but only in German:

The house is in Northrine-Westphalia. Of course 😁

Spektakuläres Bücherhaus in Mettingen

Es könnte sich um die größte Privatbibliothek Westfalens handeln: Ein Bergbauingenieur aus Mettingen hat sein Einfamilienhaus zu einem Bücherhaus gemacht.

@qwertzalotl Thanks - I’m just happy to know where in Germany and hope the next owners don’t mess with the masterpiece

@BrianJopek

The man was a miner with a love for books. The text says there is a woman who took care for him, she's trying to find someone who could take the books. There a some people who are interested. This house is really amazing. I'd love to live there...

@qwertzalotl @BrianJopek well, a mine engineer, more precisely

@waltertross @BrianJopek

Yes, sadly, the text is not very good. I saw that too in the meantime.

@qwertzalotl @BrianJopek
Whoa! And their heating bill probably was record low. I'd move in immediately.

@anlomedad @BrianJopek

Exactly my thoughts. He alone must have kept the local bookstore alive.

@BrianJopek
What are he insulation properties of a print library?

@BrianJopek

Am I the only one who sees this as an extreme fire hazard?

@Victang @BrianJopek

My thought, too. Still, I want to do something similar. 📚 🙂

@BrianJopek @Victang books are actually hard to burn. Libraries often don’t have automatic extinguishers because water does more damage to books than fire does.

@BenAveling @BrianJopek

Tell that to our fascist friends...(sorry, couldn't help myself)

@Victang @BrianJopek
There's no monopoly on wanting to burn books.

@BrianJopek

Fantastic. It's my idea of Heaven.

@BrianJopek wonderful. Expensive isolation but double win.

@BrianJopek

I'm not a CE or Architect but I'm pretty sure the roof is in some jeopardy, yeah?

@BrianJopek Extraordinary. I wonder what a directory of book titles from his collection would reveal about his interests?
@BrianJopek @patrickstewart love the sloped shelf retention system. Great use of space!
@BrianJopek @_L1vY_ how the hell are all his books *exactly* the same height?
@BrianJopek @donmelton Meh. How many of the books had he actually written?

@BrianJopek
Others have posted links to articles in German magazines already; here's one in English if anybody wants to read more:

@BrianJopek I adore books & revere libraries, but know I could never work in this room. No matter that Germany is not an earthquake-prone country, the memory of experiencing the 7.2 in San Francisco makes this room seem claustrophobic — the threat of that ceiling of falling books. The body remembers. I see significant aftershocks rattling Turkey relentlessly, adding to the sum of trauma these poor people will carry throughout their lives. (Also, how do you think he accessed the ceiling books?)
@StudioBeau Dunno but he must have had accessibility worked into the design in some manner
@BrianJopek I should probably stop trying to figure it out. 😆 Despite my own quirky inhibitions, it’s a wonderful room.
@BrianJopek ..GREAT INSULATION !...From woman's perspective...would make a CLOSET SPACE TOO! 😉😅
@BrianJopek This is where you are VERY confident on your roof's ability to not leak.
@BrianJopek was he crushed by books falling from the ceiling?
@BrianJopek life goals right there. Insulating your house with books is the way forwards.
@BrianJopek if ebooks didn't exist I'd be on the same path.
@BrianJopek this is gold. A bank of knowledge, well built piece.

@BrianJopek

I remember reading an SF story where book geeks were the only people who survived a nuclear war because all the books insulted against radiation. This guy would have been plenty safe.

@BrianJopek

Wenn da mal auf dauer die Statik mitspielt.
If the statics play along in the long run.

@BrianJopek @SCampbell
This is the attic of the Schröder house in Mettingen. More than 70k books!
Here is a video, I hope you can open it.

@ClaudiaZahn @BrianJopek Thanks so much! Yes I could open the video - quite amazing
@BrianJopek I love the idea of looking up at books to find the one you want. Love the idea of books on the ceiling.
@BrianJopek I am deeply jealous of this room.

@BrianJopek

interesting. Don't show this to DeSantis. He'd go crazy....oh, wait, he's already crazy. carry on

@BrianJopek That was in Mettingen in Northrhine-Westphalia! The house contains 60.000 books.
@BrianJopek I look at this picture and just want to sit quietly amidst all the ideas. So beautiful.
@BrianJopek by the power of grayskull 😮
@BrianJopek
That's awesome!! I would think I'd died and gone to heaven being in that room!!
@BrianJopek @AgentCarter_SSR I CANNOT allow my daughter to see this! Thankfully she's not on Masto

@BrianJopek A proper wall of books would be delicious. Having books scattered around on many shelves is my fate. :)
