As someone who has worked for years to eradicate misinformation in the history of abandoned places (and is thus aware of the already formidable stream of garbage writing surrounding them), it's fun to contemplate the absolute nosedive we're about to do into inaccurate information on every single subject as AI becomes the generative method for creating content.

"Fun."

"Here's this cool new technology," quoth the corporate content creators. "With it we can push ourselves to the forefront of every discussion on every subject conceivable without having to pay humans to do it! The internet's utility as an asset for information-sourcing is the only casualty, plus all the people who we'd have had to have paid to research and write things!"

It's going to be a fun next year or three.

Here's an example of what's going to happen: Pennhurst State School and Hospital is called Pennhurst Asylum by the owners because it's more marketable. Yes, they are very different things. The more incorrect sources cite that, and there are plenty, the more the AI souces will posit it as fact, and the more the actual fact will get buried. Now multiply this by every wrong fact ever spread. It's going to be a bloodbath for people trying to get accurate info.
@AbandonedAmerica apparently they looked around and decided the internet didn't have enough bs in it already?
@AbandonedAmerica I might have to emigrate to Mars. I hear its human population is 2.5 billion 😂
@AbandonedAmerica Damn, Abandoned America woke up and decided to take no prisoners 😭 Solid analysis, though
@alexanderworthington I'm awake, I just bite my tongue a lot.
@AbandonedAmerica Haha, well it’s cool to see you rip into things. I just kinda think of you as the guy who puts up photos of abandoned places. Which I guess is your brand, but still
@AbandonedAmerica Who would have thought that the downfall of the greatest source of easily accessible information we've ever conceived will be that it's too full of information.
@itscooldani @AbandonedAmerica can it be classed as information if it is meaningless?
@Vonskinnback @AbandonedAmerica information doesn’t have to be true to be information! An earlier draft of my post used “knowledge” instead and that is DEFINITELY wrong
@itscooldani I guess entropy is a factor in knowledge also
@AbandonedAmerica It seems totally obvious that the "LLM revolution" will overwhelm the internet with disinformation. I suppose in 5 years, the same tech companies will sell us AI tech that filters through all the garbage content that AI generated so we can get back to the pre-AI internet.
@AbandonedAmerica I'm reminded of Steve Bannon's stated strategy of "flooding the zone with shit" to break down unity and faith in institutions in the service of fascism
@JPSoCal and that seems to be exactly what it will be.
@AbandonedAmerica I've tested this a bit and, yeah, I think we're about to enter a weird, potentially catastrophic period as the "trusted" information sources collapse under a wave of ML trash
@chandlerman it'll be a benefit to society, that's for sure!
@AbandonedAmerica
Have you seen the results? The tag #BullshitFountain keeps popping up. People expecting actual intelligence will be highly disappointed.
@jimlil @AbandonedAmerica to be fair it is very representative of society right now, there are so many (apparently intelligent) people talking absolute undiluted bullshit in our media it was only a matter of time before they automated it...
@Vonskinnback @jimlil yeah, this is really going to be a blow to folks who believe in objective reality, which has already been under assault as you pointed out

@AbandonedAmerica
My other thing besides photography is coming up with recipes that are authentically correct but approachable to anyone, and it's already obvious where that will go: Search likes photos. Especially video. Big flowery language with all the SEO tags and keywords.

And quite a lot of it is obviously garbage but the same shitty websites keep popping to the top. Like literally someone added kale to an Afghani recipe because it looks pretty.

At least there it can't get worse :/

@olavf AI recipes are going to be interesting! Probably not "good" interesting!
@AbandonedAmerica yeah... if I say "karahi chicken" (which literally means "chicken cooked in a karahi") there are at least 10 variations out there including mine and a lot of them really aren't compatible. So it'l be easy for them to 'look' right but be completely inedible

@AbandonedAmerica

our AI tools are much less powefull than our mindes in handling errors

have spent about 6 years of hard work in strong AI area during my PhD very interesting theory and practice

@MikhailYasnev I would imagine so; all AI has to work with is the info we give it and charitably half of what is out there already is garbage
