I made a thing! ⚡️

It's my first ever foray into the  Apple ecosystem, so any/all feedback is welcome. Operators are standing by. 😅

Boosts are much appreciated! 🙏

Introducing The Magic Highlighter

Friends don’t let friends use old-fashioned ⌘-F.

@calebhailey Nice!! Congrats on the release! 🎉
@calebhailey Looks very promising, however i can’t try before i buy :( I agree devs should be payed for their work. However i rather would download a “ free “ app try it for a x period and then buy it after the trial has expired.
@calebhailey @simonbs Looks like an interesting an app, but on my Intel Mac, if I click the link on the website to open it in the Mac App Store, it takes me to the iPhone/iPad version and says it’s only compatible with M1 Macs or higher. Is there a version that works on Intel Macs?
@calebhailey Just snagged it. Doesn’t seem that selecting a new highlight color sticks. Bug or intended?
@calebhailey @matthewcassinelli This is incredible!! Instant buy. Excellent work 👏

@calebhailey this looks incredibly useful. Is there a privacy policy for the app (I read the website version). My only concern is that Google et al stopped passing through search queries to the recipient website so I’m guessing the extension is capturing them for the highlight?

How long are they stored, are they moved off device and are they linked to private or identifiable data?

No offence intended - just very protective of my data these days.

@calebhailey @matthewcassinelli AMAZING! This is exactly what I needed even though I had no idea I did!
@calebhailey Hey Caleb, very cool idea! What I’ve noticed so far: Using a localized version of Google (.de,.es,..) does not work, maybe that’s an idea for a future release? ✌🏻
@calebhailey so useful. Purchased. Congrats on launch.
@calebhailey 'grats on shipping, that looks like a cool little tool! :)
@calebhailey this is a perfect example of a simple idea, brilliantly executed — absolutely perfect. 👌🏻

@calebhailey Congratulations. This looks like my sort of app.

I await the day that it might support the excellent privacy-focused search engine at kagi.com (subscription based).

@calebhailey This looks great - purchased!
@calebhailey And purchased! Thank you for this!
This is one of those seemingly simple things that fixes a fundamental problem for me and I will quickly not be able to live without:
Thanks for Boosting @siracusa . What a great extension @calebhailey , already used it to make my life easier 👍

@calebhailey

This is one of those seemingly simple things that fixes a fundamental problem for me and I will quickly not be able to live without:

@calebhailey that doesn’t work with Qwant ?

@calebhailey So … I got the three "COMPLETE!"s in the install page

Do I just have to do a Google search now? When does the yellow text appear? I can highlight a word and search it, but I get the box around it, a bit different to the screenshots.

@calebhailey @siracusa This is brilliant! Any chance of kagi support?
@calebhailey @brentsimmons ok this is exceedingly cool and useful, thank you!
@calebhailey are there any videos of this in action?
@calebhailey wonderful thing I did not know I needed until seconds ago. We’ll done!
@calebhailey Very cool, and I look forward to buying it, but can you please add support for Kagi Search and Brave Search? Better yet, let us add support for any search engine we would like. Thanks!
@calebhailey looks really nice.
I always search via ddg from the address bar (Cmd+L on macOS). Is this supported as well?
@calebhailey hey great extension one happy customer. Is there a chance of adding brave search in the future? Been trying that out more than DDG recently.
@calebhailey Instabuy from me - thanks! One initial piece of feedback: due to URL encoding it doesn't handle search terms containing '+' characters, like "C++"
@calebhailey I really like this. I’m not very techie but I don’t understand the warning about webpage contents and browsing history. Could you explain please?

@calebhailey neat!! Looks very useful!

Way back when I made a Moveable Type plugin that searched the blog database using their referred search to give them some related links within the blog. Reminds me of that fun little project!

@calebhailey bought it and it's quite nice.
Would be nice to have a "Stop Highlighting" button which would disable highlighting until I search again 👍
@calebhailey another feature request:
The highlighting works fine for a search like "github action swift" but highlights too much for more human searches like "how to use swift with GitHub actions".
Ideally The Magic Highlighter would have a ignore-list with such fill-words and not highlight them.
