Y'all realize that anti-maskers are using all the same tactics as the tobacco industry did to create doubt in #publichealth measures, right?

#COVID

@luckytran yes but I think we should be clear about who we're up against. The term anti-maskers probably conjures a vision of individuals. In fact the real opponent are the large corporations and Crony Capitalists that just want you back working for them and buying their products. The Koch brothers have been a major Force here.

@sonjalondon @luckytran It's individuals as well as organized operators, though?

There are the merchants of doubt; but there are also individual people like managers who refuse to even consider requiring masks in an office; or who would have refused to stop people from lighting up inside forty years ago.

@michael_w_busch @sonjalondon @luckytran probably hard to enforce in an office compared to a shop where you could refuse entry

@boliston @sonjalondon @luckytran And yet we have enforced people not smoking in the office for decades now; and enforced indoor mask mandates for more than a year.

I am done.

@michael_w_busch @luckytran absolutely individuals have perpetrated it. But I really do not think they are the main drivers. There has even been significant evidence that many of the anti-mask "individuals" on social media are paid trolls. And many are also duped by confirmation bias.

2 pictures & an article is really all you need to show anyone to convince them, even people I’d normally not associate with…

Perhaps had I gone to law school would have learned to be more convincing, but instead have a milieu of information I’ve crammed into my head that I cannot coherently explain to anyone & don’t even try as I sound like a #conspiracyTheorist #fossilFuel #koch

@luckytran Yeah, well, once you accept that everyone's health affects everyone else, it's WAY easier to think there's this thing called "the common good" and the next thing you know all the easy extraction money dries up and people are tryin'a reduce climate disasters and implement gun control.

(please imagine Barney Fife shouting "nip it in the bud")

@GregStolze
@luckytran
Also there was the direct effect: lockdowns reduced fossil fuel consumption
@luckytran I feel sorry for them because I happen to trust Science. Without it I wouldn't be here. In fact many of us wouldn't and in a number of our cases, cutting edge Science has made that difference possible. The ignorance and narcissism is tragic but what's important is to counter that, especially when it's heard publically.

@luckytran
Yes, and it's the same tactics used by climate deniers, creationists, anti-vaccine idiots, etc.

The platygaeanists would be using the same tactics, but they lack the resources.

@luckytran Say it one more time for the people in the back! It's resilience targeting and it's an attack!
@luckytran

Yes, the tactics are familiar.

It seems opponents push for framing the question not in terms that are relatively straightforward to settle - a well fitting high quality mask dramatically reduces the risk of transmission at the time it is worn by the susceptible individual and even more if worn by the vector - but in terms that are much harder to settle - the effect of a mandate on total case numbers with poor testing, on a population wearing inconsistently masks of variable quality with unknown and often poor fit, with limited compliance.

Then the absence of incontrovertible results in the difficult framing is used to appeal to giving up on masks altogether because "they don't work in practice". This is not only illogical but entirely disregards the fact that masks are used in combination with other measures to reduce exposure. Individuals inclined to be careful would benefit tremendously from normalised masking in key situations essencial to their life, even if the general population would not mask consistently in general.

Given that these careful people are often those that are considered more vulnerable, demanding that any mask mandate be justified for the benefit of the overall population but not just for them is flirting with eugenics.
@luckytran and the same as the petrol industry did with all the lead topic (and still does with all the climate related stuff)

@luckytran

People are more likely to believe what they hear from others if:

1. They want it to be true,
2. They fear that it is true.

So it wasn’t a stretch for vile statements, like vaccines kill people and Dems are satan worshippers, to be believed. People don’t need much justification to hate and fear “others.”
