Energy crisis revives push to drill in Philippines’ largest intact wetland

MINDANAO, Philippines — There’s been a renewed push in the Philippines to develop oil and gas deposits in the southern Liguasan Marsh, prompted by the energy crisis caused by the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, which has drawn criticism from environmental groups. The 288,000-hectare (712,000-acre) Liguasan Marsh, the largest intact wetland in the Philippines and home […]

BP sued in Kenya over alleged toxic waste from 1980s oil exploration

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The High Court in Kenya ruled Thursday that a class action lawsuit can move forward against multinational oil and gas company BP alleging that decades-long toxic waste disposal contaminated drinking water in northern Kenya. The lawsuit, filed by 299 petitioners in February at the Land and Environment Court in Isiolo, alleged […]

What a great article! Trump is actually accelerating the transition to renewable energy and electric vehicles - the opposite of what his big oil buddies and funders were hoping for. #fossilfuel #renewables #transition https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/apr/18/fossil-fuel-trump-green-revolution-us-iran-renewable-energy
Who’d have thought a fossil-fuel shill like Trump would be the one to spark a green revolution?

The US attack on Iran has made the need for renewable energy inarguable, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Yesterday was close to 80ºF/26ºC.

Today's 45ºF/7ºC.

They even forecast possible SNOW flurries.

I admit a part of me really, really wants Iran to fuck up the world fossil fuel status quo.

Imagine if all the speculative profits on AI was instead invested in proper railroad network.

It would actually create jobs, make everyone's lives better AND help fight climate change.

But no, because fast profit is the only thing that matters.

“The Fossil Fuel System Is Collapsing – and Taking Civilisation’s Safety Net With It”

“The war on Iran has broken five critical systems at the same time — energy, food, industry, pharmaceuticals and government finances — and each failure is feeding every other in a self-reinforcing spiral. The fossil fuel system driving it all was already in structural collapse before the first missile was fired. The war has accelerated a process that physics and geology had set in motion long before it. There is no return to normal”

The Fossil Fuel System Is Collapsing – and Taking Civilisation’s Safety Net With It

The Iran war is destroying a system on which hospitals, harvests and factories depend – a transition to energy superabundance can save us, argue Nafeez Ahmed, Divyesh Desai and Sandrine Dixson-Declève

The Minns #labor govt is still committed to #RoadUser charges for #BEVs and #Hybrid #EVs. A flawed tax policy IMHO. I do not yet own an BEV but this road tax is a sure disinsentive to buy one at a time when all govts ought to insentivise EVs like crazy.

I calculated that it would cost me over $500 a year in tax to run an EV under that policy (not counting servicing the vehicle, charging expenses, tyres, registration, insurance, etc.) while ammortising what is still an expensive vehicle over the life of the battery (about 10 yrs or a little more).

The loss of fuel tax (do States get a cut of this?) can easily be made up with higher taxes on #FossilFuelIndustries. We need to phase most of them out of the economy anyway.

This is supposed to be a #Labor govt… it’s not. It’s as neoliberal as the #LNP was 6 years ago and still supporting #FossilFuel despite the rhetoric on #Electrification.

“Minns said the government remained committed to its road user charge, set for July 2027, putting a fee of 2.97 cents a kilometre for an EV and 2.37c/km for a plug-in hybrid.” (Source: The Guardian)
