Australian standards should be public domain
@xssfox Totally. The number of times I've used old copies of standards *during gov IT security reviews* bc they wouldn't pay for it, is not funny.

@xssfox Esp when the people that write the standards don't get paid for their work. Bit like academic publishing.

At least NZ makes a lot of NZS available for free (building related ones).

If the law requires a standard to be followed then govt should fund development & maintenance. Gets messy though when AS is an adoption of IEC or ISO.

@xssfox all standards, tbh. If you want to be assessed against a standard, I think paying for that service is fine, but gaining access to the guidance and requirements, i.e. the standards themselves, should be free and simple.
Problem is, they're not publicly owned.

@trib @xssfox yeah, in Europe, they're explicitly privately copyrighted material, to be sold at whatever price the private companies creating them see fit.

Said companies usually have a monopoly on the market in their respective country, which, you know, doesn't exactly lead to good customer service and competitive pricing.

@xssfox How dare you suggest Australia has standards
@xssfox Especially when the standards get incorporated by reference into laws or regulations you're required to follow.
@xssfox this country has standards?
@xssfox so should the European / international ones (ISO).
@xssfox do you know the fun part? Library licences only allow a literal handful of users to look at them at the same time. So either reference them at 0200 or deal with a furcon style online queue.
