I know @Gargron had been optimizing the sign up process, maybe that impact? Twitter API chaos?

The peculiar thing is that I'm not seeing a corresponding uptick in messages coming through my timeline(s), so either this is happening in parts of the Fediverse I'm not organically connected to, or people are literally just registering. Interesting also that @mastodonusercount also doesn't register a significant changes in messages per hour (aside from some spurious peaks)
