Last year, the top railroads made over $26 billion in profits and paid their wealthy shareholders over $20 billion in stock buybacks and dividends.

But these companies claim they can't afford to give rail workers paid sick leave?

@rbreich But they have no problem making entire towns sick with carcinogenic fumes.
@rbreich It doesn’t look like the railroads were able to “afford” to implement safety measures to prevent the derailment disaster that evacuated a town of 5,000 and threatens to contaminate a wider area in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. They must be (morally) bankrupt.
@rbreich You see, then the shareholders might need to settle for a mere $19 billion. It’d be a tragedy.
@rbreich Good point! Tax share buybacks?

@rbreich
I always remind myself how fuc*ing abysmal these corps and businesses are.

This is a reason why I do so.

@rbreich I don't suppose somewhere in the "entitled" group there are those who claim that illegal immigrants want to take railroad jobs to play "you versus them" distraction games?
@rbreich Or take adequate safety precautions.
@rbreich
#Corporations will commit the most heinous crimes imaginable if:
1. They're pretty sure they can get away with it.
2. It puts a dollar in the pockets of their #shareholders.
@rbreich Nor functional braking systems.
