The disgusting irony is that according to the history (or mythology) we're taught, the USA was founded to escape from tyranny. But it seems we brought tyranny with us after all, buried in our ancestors' luggage - or maybe not so buried, given that slavery and racism found fertile ground to sink their toxic roots into from the start.
