Okay, I am tired of keeping this to myself, so here goes:

A mere 26 years after The Fortunate Fall*, I am working seriously on another novel. The book is called What We Are Seeking and I really don't know what to say about it, so I will just post the opening paragraphs.

* Published under my deadname, Raphael Carter

Another novel called Courting Hellfire is plucking at my sleeve insisting that I need to write it, and recently informed me that it wants to be a diptych when it grows up, but it's probably too early to say anything at all about that one.

It's strange to have too many ideas after such a long period of creative nullity. Changing the hormone levels in my brain has been good for me. Here's hoping it stays legal.

For those here wondering if The Fortunate Fall will be republished, the answer is YES! Tor Books, mid-2024.

I am delighted to announce that The Fortunate Fall will be reissued as a Tor Essential trade paperback in mid-2024. (Exact release date to be determined.) The book will be published under my new name but the old one will be on the cover in smaller type, to help people reconnect with the book. This is the best way for the book to come back into print I could have hoped for and I am over the moon. #CamWriting

@LateOnsetGirl I'm so thrilled by this. I love that book so much.
@LateOnsetGirl That is such good news! I finished reading it last night and absolutely loved it.
@LateOnsetGirl I am *overjoyed* to hear about the new book, and glad for the name update!
@avram Thank you! And I'm glad the name update reached you. I wish there were a better way to get the info to everybody who'd be interested, but as it is, I just keep stochastically coming out.
@LateOnsetGirl All I can say is, DAMN, I am looking forward to this. I wish you all the best on it!

@LateOnsetGirl ooh! The Fortunate Fall was one of the best things I read that century. I still treasure the copy that I bought from Uncle Hugo’s in Minneapolis and rave about it at every opportunity. I wondered why it was the only thing by that author.

I’m very much looking forward to the new book.

@LateOnsetGirl Also: Wow! I’m so delighted for you that transition has been so helpful.
@LateOnsetGirl Yaaaaaaaaaaaay! Waiting patiently, but bouncing up and down.
@Bluejo I'm very eager to get it out into the world so you can read it! Sadly, as you can probably guess from the sample, John's point of view is not quick and easy to write.
@LateOnsetGirl I loved "The Fortunate Fall" and am happy to hear it! 💙
@LateOnsetGirl The Fortunate Fall is one of my favourite novels ever, and this looks fantastic too. I'm very excited about this news!!
@villainousfriend Thank you so much. That book has been out of print a long time—I'm grateful that anyone still thinks about it.
@LateOnsetGirl I am very happy to learn that the author of The Fortunate Fall is alive and writing.

@LateOnsetGirl This is nifty news and such a promising start, I look forward to reading it one day.

And so cool to see you here; I’m somewhat amused because earlier I was noting that many of the folks I’m reconnecting with here are early bloggers.

@windowseat Good to reconnect. We should start up a webring.
@windowseat @LateOnsetGirl If Jorn Barger turns up here, I think I'll give him a miss.

@LateOnsetGirl Just found your post due to @jdnicoll's post on Tor jogging my memory about The Fortunate Fall; it was pretty formative queer/trans sff for me, I was lucky my library had a copy.

It's great to hear about your transition, and this is excellent news. The worldbuilding looks like it's going to be fascinating.

Wishing you the very, very best.

@rhiannonrevolts @jdnicoll Oh, thank you. I'm grateful to be remembered by anyone, but especially by those who responded to the queer and trans themes in my 90s work. Rest assured that my works in progress continue to be very, very queer.

@LateOnsetGirl This is awesome news! I like the fragment you've shared here and look forward to being able to read the whole thing.

(Tangentially, your _Congenital Agenesis of Gender Ideation_ has been important to me for a long time, for reasons that I still don't fully understand.)

@fidgetyhands Thank you. I'm really glad the story spoke to you.
@LateOnsetGirl I'm psyched to see that you're still here and still writing!
@Lee More again than still, really, but thank you!
@LateOnsetGirl Okay, this is just beautiful writing. I *love* the key metaphor of the seasons now, and I'm intrigued by the implications of “the summer captain would be laid to rest beneath the stars”. Watching with interest!
@dotcolm Thank you! Winter always feels to me like someone turned up the gravity—moving around is harder, I'm weighed down by a heavy coat, suiting up to go outside feels like putting on a spacesuit—so it's a natural metaphor here in the frozen north, I think.
@LateOnsetGirl this makes me very happy. Can’t wait to read the whole thing.
@CherylMorgan Thank you! I am trying to get this thing done but it's going to be a while.
@LateOnsetGirl I’m so pleased to see this! I loved loved LOVED The Fortunate Fall and I’m delighted you’re at work on something new. ❤️🎉
@LateOnsetGirl OK, looking forward to reading this whenever it's fully baked!
@cstross I'm looking forward to you being able to read it! Too bad there's writing involved in getting from here to there
@LateOnsetGirl I feel your pain! (Am mired, once again, in a space opera I began in 2015 …)
@LateOnsetGirl This is a fascinating start. Thank you for sharing it!
@LateOnsetGirl The Fortunate Fall is one of my most treasured books. The opening paragraphs you’ve provided read beautifully. Cannot wait for the new novel and its unmanifested cousins.
@LateOnsetGirl
The Fortunate Fall was a brilliant beginning to a remarkable writing career. The excerpt from your new work shows we don’t have to wait any longer for the continuation of that career.
@LateOnsetGirl So excited to hear of the new novel and telling my two trans kids about how good TFF was (and still is).
@deetwelve Oh wow, well my first reaction is "it's so old, they couldn't possibly be interested," but TFF does seem to have a few younger trans fans, so maybe!
@LateOnsetGirl OMG this looks amazing! Seasonal ritual/governance cycles on a starship?!?!
@r_emrys I mean, all seasonal mythology is already based on physics so why not different physics?
