My book has a cover! A pretty one, too. I guess that means it's actually happening.

I just finished Chapter 10 of What We Are Seeking and the manuscript has reached 55,000 words. I don't claim to know exactly how long this thing is going to wind up being, but I'm going to call that half done.
In honor of the somewhat arbitrary occasion, here's an excerpt from Chapter 4, in which a major character and a new gender are introduced.
And for those who missed it, a link to the first excerpt: https://wandering.shop/@LateOnsetGirl/109831470215392362
Attached: 3 images Okay, I am tired of keeping this to myself, so here goes: A mere 26 years after The Fortunate Fall*, I am working seriously on another novel. The book is called What We Are Seeking and I really don't know what to say about it, so I will just post the opening paragraphs. * Published under my deadname, Raphael Carter #AmWriting #CamWriting #WhatWeAreSeeking
This is a preview of Courting Hellfire, the novel I should *not* be working on right now. There's a lot in it about trans people fleeing hostile jurisdictions—or surviving while remaining in them—and some days I need to write about that anyway.
I don't want to reveal how religion works in this universe yet, so I chose a bit from chapter 3 that does not give that away.
The narrator is Attis (they/them). Joan is their ship's theologian.
For anyone out there who wants writing updates but NOT pictures of my cat, I have two things to say:
1. What is wrong with you, she is adorable
2. No problem, I got ya: this is Mastodon, so you can follow hashtag #CamWriting just as if it were a person.
I am delighted to announce that The Fortunate Fall will be reissued as a Tor Essential trade paperback in mid-2024. (Exact release date to be determined.)
The book will be published under my new name but the old one will be on the cover in smaller type, to help people reconnect with the book.
This is the best way for the book to come back into print I could have hoped for and I am over the moon. #CamWriting
Another novel called Courting Hellfire is plucking at my sleeve insisting that I need to write it, and recently informed me that it wants to be a diptych when it grows up, but it's probably too early to say anything at all about that one.
It's strange to have too many ideas after such a long period of creative nullity. Changing the hormone levels in my brain has been good for me. Here's hoping it stays legal.
