There are 193 member nations in the United Nations.

All but 11 guarantee some form of paid sick leave.

Guess what? The U.S. is one of those 11.

As a result, 33 million American workers have no paid sick leave from their employer.

This is deeply inhumane. Paid leave. Now.

@rbreich Also inhumane is the fact that the US is the only #UnitedNations member (actually the only country on the planet) that hasn't ratified the UN Convention on the #Rights of the Child. #UNCRC #ChildrensRights
@annecollier @rbreich why is that?

@carolw @annecollier @rbreich

I assume because the USA sees human life as cheap, abundant, and of little value.

@carolw @rbreich The Washington Post tried to answer that (quite ably) almost a decade ago, when my country was 1 of 3 that hadn't ratified the CRC, here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2014/11/21/why-wont-the-u-s-ratify-the-u-n-s-child-rights-treaty/ A year later, after Somalia and S.Sudan had ratified it, the ACLU weighed in on this question too: https://www.aclu.org/news/human-rights/theres-only-one-country-hasnt-ratified-convention-childrens Sadly, I think it would be even harder to make it happen now. Hope I'm wrong.
Why won’t the U.S. ratify the U.N.’s child rights treaty?

The non-ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is hypocritical.

The Washington Post
@rbreich Paid Leave and Paternity Leave.
@rbreich Nice find. Thanks for sharing. Now? I’m sure they’re trembling at your demand. Tissue paper.

@rbreich

The U.S. is one of the most inhumane countries in the world. We can't even have universal healthcare; why on earth do you think the oligarchs would allow us to have paid sick leave?

@rbreich

Even if the middle class has access to healthcare, we are not allowed to use our healthcare as the fountain of youth. Imagine, someone needing a life-saving procedure is put on hold because some rich a-hole is tying up hospital resources in search of eternal life.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/02/06/american-health-care-disparity-rich/

As basic health care grows unaffordable, the rich seek eternal youth

A record number of Americans say they can't afford necessary health care, while the wealthy drop increasing sums on elaborate out-of-pocket measures.

The Washington Post
@rbreich @KathyLK just discovering the US healthcare system (relocating from France): this is an insanely expensive shame.
@rbreich This is not surprising. We are infested with Republicans so we will always be a socially backward country.
@rbreich going through this right now. My wife had surgery less than a week ago and needs to be cared for for 8 weeks. I was allowed 3 paid sick days or 8 weeks of unpaid leave. I was also informed if I took the leave my job is not fmla protected. Needless to say I used 24 hrs of my 500 hours of banked sick time, as that is all I was permitted.
@rbreich our pro-union President couldn't even get sick days in a contact he forced on the railroad unions. They don't care about us.
@KidOrnery @rbreich not he couldn't. he decided not to.
the same companies he was batting for have now created the worst environmental disaster since Chernobyl.
@rbreich SSP here in the UK is £94.25 a week. Not great. I'm having to use holiday time as I can't afford to be sick
@rbreich I worked for more than one company that had no sick or personal pay. I had to drag myself in with a 102-degree fever, strep throat, and bronchitis, and even came in when my father was in the hospital. I had no choice.
