You may want to post in the Birdsite, because everyone here we have an instance... 🤭😉
@kikobar One instance will cease to exist in three months because its admin is closing it down. This post is for them.

@futzle yes, yes.

Mine was a silly joke. Hope it didn't confuse anyone.

@kikobar @futzle I thought old.mermaid.town was also on that list? and but still a nice idea to post on the birdsite 😆 just for variety of choice
@kikobar there's a bunch of people (18k-ish) having to move from mastodon.lol over the next 3 months because they're shutting down
@futzle if I had to pick another one today I'd probably go with tenforward even so I know very little about them ☺️ <insert enterprise emoji> was just good times

@futzle mstdn.ca, mstdn.games and tech.lgbt have all announced they’ve got room. Mstdn.ca is open signup while the other two (I believe) are manual.

Edited to correct incorrect instance name in OP.

@cautionwip @futzle Is the spelling on games.lgbt correct? I can't seem to find it for some reason

@OctaviaConAmore @futzle

I'm an idiot. It's mstdn.games

Sorry.

It's just that it's specifically positioning itself as a safe space for queer gamers, afaiu, so my sleepy brain conflated the two factors and came up with that. yeesh. Gonna edit the OP so noone else gets misled.

@cautionwip @OctaviaConAmore My list fixed too, thanks!
@futzle @OctaviaConAmore chaosfem.tw is advertising they're open for transwomen looking for a new home. Given the context of how all this happened, it seems like a relevant instance to list.

@cautionwip @futzle I'm glad to know my tech isn't malfunctioning today (≧∀≦)

Do you happen to know the character limit on there, by chance?

@OctaviaConAmore @futzle Only on mstdn.ca, which is the baseline 500.
@cautionwip @futzle
Awww. From what I've gathered so far, it seems that mastodon.art is 500 and tech.lgbt is, quite suitably, 1024 (*‘ω‘ *)
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle There's a server out there someone mentioned that has like 50k+ character limit, based on something about The Bee Movie, but damned if I can recall it now.
@cautionwip @futzle toot.cat seems to be basically unlimited (it's set to something like 1M+). The premise is that character limits are just a misguided attempt at emulating the blue bbq bird site and that it's stupid (which I agree with). At this point, tech.lgbt is at the top of my short list because of its 1024 character limit and, honestly, I really wish there just wasn't a default character limit in any practical sense (I say while truncating one thought off of this comment)
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle I go back and forth about that. On the hand, yes, it’s absolutely an arbitrary limit and an artificial constraint.On the other, I think that constraint minimizes chaff & enforces tight writing. It’s also a creative boundary like a haiku, IMO.
Plus it’s easier to doom-scroll through micro-blogs than macro.
But hey, that’s one goal of this protocol, AFAIU : to make social media more personally useful & try out new modalities.
And always : Chacun à son goût! :)

@cautionwip @futzle I think you've definitely got a good point about the browsability of it. Unfortunately, as tight as I can make my writing (and as many of my posts might fit into that limit), it's really annoying when I have to break up 1 post into 3~5 at really odd points, badly damaging the readability and flow. If people want to write haiku, that's great, but there's a reason I'm a musician, not a poet.

Reddit is really comfortable in that regard, but just doesn't have the sense of commu

@OctaviaConAmore @futzle

🤣

Nice. :)

@cautionwip @futzle I initially did try to pear down my post to make it fit, but then I figured maybe I could use not just the meaning of words, but the shape of words to convey the experience better (≧∀≦)
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle See?It’s a joke that’s only possible due to the context and medium. And a good one at that.
@cautionwip @futzle And the point of the joke is that the 500-character post limit hinders my writing in a real and practical way. I'd much rather not have to and just write out what I mean to say (which is why I'm moving to an instance with a higher character limit (・∀・))
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle Totally fair. :) I’d honestly enjoy a larger limit, but I also take pleasure in the crafting limitations that force me to play with my words.

@cautionwip @OctaviaConAmore @futzle
Oh I wish I could quote-tweet this novella long joke toot I saw a couple days ago. It was amazing. Maybe I can find it and post a link.

Found it!

I want the best of both worlds: 500 char limit with an override to go long when the feels dictate.

@cautionwip @OctaviaConAmore @futzle qoto.org has a 65535-character limit, but not based on the Bee Movie.
@cautionwip @futzle mstdn.ca should be avoided. That one is centralized in #Cloudflare’s walled garden. I encounter Tor-hostility when I try to visit that site.
@koherecoWatchdog @futzle Are you able to see my profile?
@cautionwip @futzle Just now yes, but it’s random luck. When I try to reach your profile I get a #Cloudflare page & have to wait for some checks to run. Whenever that happens, sometimes the content is eventually¹ sent and sometimes not. Often it takes the direction of pushing a CAPTCHA & typically the CAPTCHA is broken. ① by “eventually” I mean sometimes it takes a long time; sometimes not.
@futzle Would be great to have a short note on each about who they are primarily meant for. One is primarily for Queer people, another for indie artists, etc.
@kimschulz Agree. I haven’t got the spoons for that though. Might not have the character count either.
@kimschulz @futzle dunno if this helps, but i used this site to help identify instances that would be a good place for me to land on mastodon: https://instances.social/

@futzle I’m going to stay at my current server until they reject me. I like it, I don’t know what the difference is though.

@futzle I'm the admin at gamepad.club and we have capacity. We've also signed up to the Mastodon Server Covenant.
@futzle @xrobau your server open to new people?
@Nick It’s on the list! @xrobau
@futzle @xrobau Wig.gl? I can't see it there.
@Nick @xrobau Ah, I mistook who “you” referred to there. Old.mermaid.town is on the list. If wig.gl should be then let me know.
@futzle i will have to get my computer and check each of them out, just being open to users is not enough for me
@futzle We have more then enough space and welcome new users over at https://woof.tech :)!

@futzle as an Australian I can't help but giggle when I see bne.social. It's clearly a euphemism for prison, right?
@rood You’ll have to explain the joke to this Australian because I don’t understand the reference. Maybe we’re different parts of the country or different generations?

@futzle sorry, I wasn't indicating that all Australians know about bne's.

I meant there is an Australian prison population that will discuss going to prison for B&E/BnE. So, my mind goes there first every time 😄

But you're right. It's probably uncommon these days considering surveillance technology makes it a less prevalent crime.

@rood *frowns in incomprehenion*

💡 Breaking and entering! Gotcha.

@futzle got any with mods who won't tone police trans people and BIPOC?

@futzle hmm.. *looks around his instance. ;)
@futzle I've not seen the #FindAServer tag, but if we're playing this game, I can drop my server in the list.

@futzle honestly this is why I always have a secondary account on the same overall platform at all times.

If you want to follow my method:
- make another account somewhere on fediverse you like
- update occasionally
- if original instance goes down/ gets shut down/ etc. then you just migrate to secondary fairly quickly
- saves time on migration with not needing to make another account from scratch and THEN migrating to it

@futzle Some of those have capacity because they use a privacy-hostile corp and are part of a centralized walled garden:
❌ aus.social ← Cloudflare
❌ eigenmagic.net ← Cloudflare
❌ mastodon.au ← Cloudflare
❌ syd.social ← Cloudflare
❌ thecanadian.social ← Cloudflare

But using CloudFlare’s CDN is among the few good ways to avoid DDoS attacks.

I wouldn’t call them a walled garden, they still perfectly federate and allow IPv6

@Erik @futzle #Cloudflare is a #walledGarden b/c access is restricted. It’s not open. Certain browsers & networks are blocked. A crude & unreliable basis for access is used, which makes CF a lousy way to avoid DDoS. It’s also a sham. That is, if an attack happens, the gratis contract by CF is just the bait to make you dependent. You will be told you need to pay a premium for continuity.
@futzle @Erik *Availability* is what CF fools customers into thinking they are getting, but it’s self-defeating the same way #SpamHaus is. That is, they block legit traffic under the perception of protecting legit traffic.
@Erik
Also being federated does not overcome the #walledGarden problem. Visibility of msgs in the #fedi is quite complex, ugly, & often disservicing. There are many cases where you need to visit source node to review a complete thread b/c your own node may just get fragments of a discussion for various reasons. There are times that I could not analyze visibility anomalies b/c a CF site was blocking relatively arbitrarily.
/cc @w

Okay, got that.

However, if you do not use CloudFlare’s proxy service, just the DNS (which I do for many services due to a CloudFlare API script I wrote that is essentially a DynDNS service) encrypted traffic can’t be seen and the worst part is that CloudFlare knows the IP addresses of everyone accessing your site, correct?
