Tbh, I'm on a proactively moderated server that has preemptively kept a lot of the worst folks from being able to reach us queers here, and the feedback from a handful of black users here is that #blahajzone has also been generally been harassment free in comparison to other servers they've been on.

Imo, it's actually not to hard as a queer or trans person to find #servers on the #fediverse that will protect you from harassment, but that it is harder to find servers that will also protect indigenous, black, Asian users from racist harassment. And too many queer white folks get a free pass for ignorance tbh, a privilege that many of us have had for far too long.

It's much the same on #Bluesky where I haven't been harassed for being #queer and trans - again there's large communities and plenty of allies - but anti-black racism has been in the spotlight again recently and the devs called out for lagging behind on safety and moderation features that bigots exploit for harassment campaigns.

Far too many fediverse projects are led by men, mostly white men, who are lionised, promoted and financed by another layer of mostly white men. They ultimately get the veto on minority protections.

Before i joined *firefish.social* yesterday, as a calculated gamble / experiment, i could not find a list of nasty #servers / #Instances that are #blocked [for my safety / protection]. Now that i am a member here, so far i still cannot find such a listing. Until & unless i can find this list, i'm unsure if i want to remain here. For comparison, all my prior & current #Mastodon Instances have extensive lists [albeit some only visible after joining], which for #LGBTQI peeps is very important. blahaj.zone is a small server set up as a project between friends, our two admins. It's friends and friends of friends, and more recently anyone who is queer-friendly and likes our vibe or wants to check out a #Calckey instance. I love the vibe here and that our blocklist is mostly just Nazis & transphobes rather than queers policing each other. AFAIK, we're not looking to become anything much more than we are now. I hope my many trans femme friends who are frustrated by the walls that exist between the big instances look to create a bunch of smaller instances like ours. I love the chill vibe here and that I can pretty much stay connected with everyone. I think we punch above our weight as a model of what an instance can be. I hope we inspire others to spin up something manageable between friends and friends of friends. A much more federated #fediverse based on smaller instances seems like I better fediverse imho. #mastodon #defederation

A big hello and welcome to all the new people who've joined #blahajzone the past couple of days. It's great to have you here!

Our admins are @ada and @supakaity.
Ada leads the front of house and moderation side of Blåhaj Zone, while Kaity leads the back-end and maintains Hajkey for us & a small group of other instances.

Our server runs a fork of Calckey that we call #Hajkey (pron. hi-key). We'll soon be merging our code with #Iceshrimp. A summary of the features unique to Hajkey.

Everyone: home.social will close down on June, 16th 2023 23:59 CET. Please migrate your accounts in time to avoid losing content and followers. Thanks.It appears that @ralf has been thinking about whether large - and harder to moderate - servers are even a good idea for the #Fediverse.

The last thing you should take from the closure home.social is that you should just move to mastodon.social to avoid being on a server that closes, or is too big to fail, or be defederated. I think that all bets will soon be off and there's going to be some large realignments in instances, in clients, and in federation when #Meta et al arrive.

Now if you're looking for a small (currently ~290), well-moderated instance with a strong queer vibe then perhaps #blahajzone might be a good fit? Why not talk to some of us here and find out?

Run by @ada & @supakaity, we're a trans-led instance for queer folx and allies, that has a deliberate queer vibe. We're safety conscious and we're trying to build more user safety tools. We're well-federated and our members have access to relays such as relay.gay.

You can import your #Mastodon content to our servers, just remember to download your Mastodon archive (Settings > Import/Export) before you migrate. You'll be able to import your posts once you've migrated.

Thinking hard about closing down home.social. Moderation is becoming a nightmare. "Inter-instance-wars", too. Plus: Large instances might ultimately not be a good idea to begin with and defy the entire purpose of a fediverse.

@atomicpoet I think whatever we become we'll really only have 'succeeded' if #Calckey leads the way with #FediverseSafety ahead of features and scale.

The Calckey I see would
- have a diverse team of folks that has the time to listen to the safety discourses, and the lived experience to know why safety matters, and informs their #development decisions.
- make importing #blocklists or integrating third party #moderation tools easypeasy, so no user finds themselves on an new server that's open to dogpiled by the worst elements of the #Fediverse.
- have robust #accessibility features that are as important to promote as #quoteposts and #MFM.
- have granular user controls for #safety - opt-in & opt-out; and features - like turning down/off MFM when it's overwhelming without a user needing to resort to CSS scripts.
- not really care to be a birdsite or #Mastodon alternative. Let's work to be a better secret third thing, or fourth, or fifth thing.

If we really have to duplicate the big influencer account thing, I'd like to see more non-White, autistic, disabled, queers, and women voices. They're here, but they're often forced to be critics of a newer hegemony. Let's be listening for how can Calckey become the main service of choice for Black, POC and Indigenous women to join, spin up servers, become developers, and have prominent voices on. The rest of the good stuff will follow that.

I think we can do that, but only if we prioritise, and promote minority voices, and do the structural work to support them coming to the service.
