These instances have advertised on #FindAServer as having capacity. (I am no longer updating this post except to remove servers now at capacity; check the hashtag for many MANY other announcements!)

@futzle mstdn.ca, mstdn.games and tech.lgbt have all announced they’ve got room. Mstdn.ca is open signup while the other two (I believe) are manual.

Edited to correct incorrect instance name in OP.

@cautionwip @futzle Is the spelling on games.lgbt correct? I can't seem to find it for some reason

@OctaviaConAmore @futzle

I'm an idiot. It's mstdn.games

Sorry.

It's just that it's specifically positioning itself as a safe space for queer gamers, afaiu, so my sleepy brain conflated the two factors and came up with that. yeesh. Gonna edit the OP so noone else gets misled.

@cautionwip @futzle I'm glad to know my tech isn't malfunctioning today (β‰§βˆ€β‰¦)

Do you happen to know the character limit on there, by chance?

@OctaviaConAmore @futzle Only on mstdn.ca, which is the baseline 500.
@cautionwip @futzle
Awww. From what I've gathered so far, it seems that mastodon.art is 500 and tech.lgbt is, quite suitably, 1024 (*β€˜Ο‰β€˜ *)
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle There's a server out there someone mentioned that has like 50k+ character limit, based on something about The Bee Movie, but damned if I can recall it now.
@cautionwip @futzle toot.cat seems to be basically unlimited (it's set to something like 1M+). The premise is that character limits are just a misguided attempt at emulating the blue bbq bird site and that it's stupid (which I agree with). At this point, tech.lgbt is at the top of my short list because of its 1024 character limit and, honestly, I really wish there just wasn't a default character limit in any practical sense (I say while truncating one thought off of this comment)
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle I go back and forth about that. On the hand, yes, it’s absolutely an arbitrary limit and an artificial constraint.On the other, I think that constraint minimizes chaff & enforces tight writing. It’s also a creative boundary like a haiku, IMO.
Plus it’s easier to doom-scroll through micro-blogs than macro.
But hey, that’s one goal of this protocol, AFAIU : to make social media more personally useful & try out new modalities.
And always : Chacun Γ  son goΓ»t! :)

@cautionwip @futzle I think you've definitely got a good point about the browsability of it. Unfortunately, as tight as I can make my writing (and as many of my posts might fit into that limit), it's really annoying when I have to break up 1 post into 3~5 at really odd points, badly damaging the readability and flow. If people want to write haiku, that's great, but there's a reason I'm a musician, not a poet.

Reddit is really comfortable in that regard, but just doesn't have the sense of commu

@OctaviaConAmore @futzle

Nice. :)

@cautionwip @futzle I initially did try to pear down my post to make it fit, but then I figured maybe I could use not just the meaning of words, but the shape of words to convey the experience better (β‰§βˆ€β‰¦)
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle See?It’s a joke that’s only possible due to the context and medium. And a good one at that.
@cautionwip @futzle And the point of the joke is that the 500-character post limit hinders my writing in a real and practical way. I'd much rather not have to and just write out what I mean to say (which is why I'm moving to an instance with a higher character limit (γƒ»βˆ€γƒ»))
@OctaviaConAmore @futzle Totally fair. :) I’d honestly enjoy a larger limit, but I also take pleasure in the crafting limitations that force me to play with my words.
