Ciaran Cannon TD notes that the feasibility study for twin-tracking the Athenry to Galway rail line is now two years overdue, and has been tied up in the All-Island Strategic Rail Review, which itself is overdue and cannot be published until there is an executive in Stormont.

And today we are hearing that restoration of the executive has been postponed for another year.

I despair! 😫

And to make matters worse, the Taoiseach has reaffirmed his support for the Galway City Ring Road, a project that will perpetuate car-dependency, increase car volumes, and increase CO2 emissions.

Sean Canney TD gives an excellent summary of the damage that is being done by the uncertainty surrounding the Galway City Ring Road and the frustration at the lack of progress in developing the public transport network.

The Tánaiste, in response, notes that the current congestion and volume of cars is "contributing negatively to climate change targets" but thinks that a road which will increase the volume of cars and the CO2 emissions is "essential in terms of the growth and development of Galway city"

It is clear that neither Fianna Fáil nor Fine Gael are serious about climate action.

The Climate Action Plan is not just a report that can be quietly shelved - it is the law.

@ccferrie Have you seen how laws are enforced here?
They'll fund it with active travel funds.
@Fuzzbizz The Ring Road isn't going to happen but the damage that is being done as we wait for it not to happen is the real problem at the moment. Sean Canney summarises it well in the link in my previous post.
@ccferrie ah now they'll get it built. Call it a super-greenway and then tell you to give the garda a call when it's full of Land Rovers.
