“Many people feel that the road is really about opening-up land for development and there is huge merit in looking at other options, including a light rail service, park and ride facilities. and improved public transport."
You might be forgiven for thinking this is a recent comment on the Galway Ring Road but in fact it dates from 25 years ago. If only those voices had been listened to back then we might have a functioning transport system in #Galway by now.

12 years ago, 54 families were told that their houses would be demolished to build the Galway City Ring Road. They have been living in a stressful, worrying limbo ever since and still don't know if it's definitely going to happen, when it might happen, or where they are going to move to.
And the worst of it is, it is all so totally unnecessary - the stress, the worry, the uncertainty, and the ring road itself. A shame on those who continue to push for it.

"Some very creative accounting was needed to greenlight the Galway ring road"

I've been reading through the decision to grant planning permission for the Galway City Ring Road and it includes some extraordinary creative accounting to justify the spending of €1bn on a project that will make traffic worse, not better, in Galway.
Essentially An Coimisiún Pleanala has decided not to deal with the road in isolation but as part of the ten-year-old Galway Transport Strategy and it makes the following assertion:

It's very disappointing to hear that Labour supports the Galway City Ring Road - it really feels like they are trying to straddle two horses at once on this one, and that rarely ends well.
You can listen back to the documentary here https://www.galwaybayfm.ie/podcasts/galway-talks/ringroaded-a-documentary-from-galway-talks-213825
It was heartbreaking to hear the stories of the families affected, especially when it is all so unnecessary. And the worst of it is, it is far from over.
Whatever decision An Coimisiún Pleanála makes in the coming months, this saga is likely to continue for years to come, at more cost to the public purse and at more personal cost to both the families affected and to the wider population of Galway.
