#Mastodon / #Fediverse folks -

We are not doing this amazing place proper when we dig at people showing up from #Twitter when it has problems or finally pissed them off

There's nothing that will drive new users away faster than chastising them when they try to make a difficult change

I get it - I haven't been on the bird site in months.. but a poor intro could have ended my #Masto experiment quickly

Let's try to be the place everyone wants to interact at... a little kindness goes a long way

@sharearea Well said...I'm fed up to the back teeth of people slagging off Twitter and it's users who come over here...let people do what the fuck they want and be nice to those making an effort on here for the first time FFS...

@Judeet88 absolutely!

I left for a lot of reasons, but I sympathize with anyone having to change up their habits and/or lifestyles.

They'll leave when they want.. or they won't... I got too many real life things going on to hound people for things they likely already know.

@sharearea When I was here the first time (around Christmas) this is exactly what happened. Don't so this, don't do that (Can't you read the signs - sorry, I had to!). Do this, do that, will you please stop doing that. Was told I could never come back under that name. Left it a month, came back, same name but different server and liking it a lot more

@BrownSquirrel

I'm sorry that was your first experience here. I was fortunate, but I've seen enough of it to know it happened more often than it should.

There is a lot of angst against the bird site and it's owner here, and that much I understand. But finger wagging because it took someone a few months longer to get here is the same "rando reply-guy" mentality a lot of people disliked intially about the bird site in the first place.

@sharearea Agree and also just not allowing time to get used to the change and do things their way. I'm pretty smart but it took me a while, and still is, to get used to the new things and to remember so many rules. This server seems to not have so many rules which is better but my 1st was horrendous. Older people like me take longer than many others & no one allowed for that.

@BrownSquirrel

Feel free to reach out if there's anything I can help you with. I'm not expert by any means, but I do have a little experience and am a web developer by trade.

And welcome again!

@sharearea Thank you for your kind offer. I am married to a pc tech so I get help on that type of thing. This just adds to that and I appreciate it.
@sharearea I have told people that the transition is not easy, but if you put in the effort, you’ll be rewarded. Like life.

@SwellWines

100% agree.. my interaction here is off the charts compared to the bird and except for like 2 messages it's all been very positive, but you really do need to give a little.

@sharearea exactly this. Remember, it is hard to leave an abusive relationship, and relationships don’t get much more abusive than with unconvicted rapist Elon Musk. When I left bird I used to go visit a lot. Then less. Now rarely if ever. It takes time and we’re all on our own path.

@oldmanmike

Same... I signed up in November here or test it out. When I first started I wasn't sure I would ever leave the bird, but I leaned in heavily here and before long this felt a lot more like home. The new year seemed like a breaking point and except for logging once to send a PM I haven't felt a need to be there.

Had I gotten the same "welcome" I've seen some folks get here I'd have never come back, and some of the most pious offenders have been here a shorter time than me!

@sharearea Rome wasn’t built in a day, but it fell overnight. Mastodon is an important opportunity to create a truly free information platform, protected from the influence of financial mechanism.
