The children’s show ‘Bluey’ is a balm for stressed, child-free adults

Joe Brumm, the show’s creator, isn’t surprised it’s resonating with adults who find the show on TikTok. “A story is a story,” he says.

@Abbyohlheiser I tell all of my friends about it, you really don't need kids at all to watch.

@Abbyohlheiser I’m not in this demographic since i have a kiddo, but I’m kinda disappointed that Bandit is considered toxic by some. I’m pretty sure he’s my parenting spirit animal. 😐

I very much appreciate the article and the perspectives - for me it shines light on why my nephews (20 & 16) are also into Bluey.

@ChrisBoren I think the toxic bandit discourse is just part of the whole "if there's a fandom of it, there's Discourse about it" phenom. Certainly not a huuuge part of the convos I had or observed!
@Abbyohlheiser @ChrisBoren toxic Bandit discourse? He’s like dad of the year!
@Abbyohlheiser My granddaughter’s favorite show (and I like it too).
@Abbyohlheiser Every episode demonstrates excellent improv skills! Of which there are so many benefits.
@Abbyohlheiser Bluey is the one show I can watch with my toddler and actually enjoy 😅

@Abbyohlheiser I know a lot of parents who recognize the show’s strengths, and enjoy it above and beyond what their kids do.

But “stressed, child-free”?

Ok.

@jason. What exactly are you implying here?
@Abbyohlheiser weird experience to center
@jason I have a feeling that this is a troll to some degree, but here's my earnest response: I think it's pretty expected and known that parents like the show, sometimes more than their kids. Why is it weird to write about something unexpected happening, especially if said piece interviews multiple parents within the fandom about what they've observed?

@Abbyohlheiser oh I can’t read it. It wants me to consent to being tracked. I can read WaPo in my Apple News subscription, but there I have blocked the entire outlet due to their general worldview (this is a critique from the left, don’t get me wrong)

Carry on, you’re right I don’t have much to say here.

@jason all fair in terms of those privacy concerns. Just maybe next time consider reading a story before weighing in with a critique in a reply to the person who wrote it :)
@Abbyohlheiser It’s nothing compared to “Hey, Duggee!”
@Abbyohlheiser Bluey is a masterpiece of modern Australian writing. It hits all of our cultural tropes clearly on the head, it's irreverent without meaness, it's age appropriate no matter which age you are when watching it, and it presents the world from children's perspectives without ever talking down to them. I find it joyous to watch, and am grateful for having a young great niece to introduce me to it.
@Abbyohlheiser Bluey is a parenting show that happens to be entertaining to kids and I cannot be convinced otherwise
