Wearing my most poetic shirt today, one that says "Democracy Dies in Darkness" on it in ink so faded that it's nearly unreadable.

Hey. I'm a journalist who's been tracking health misinformation online for...a long time.

I'm trying to learn more about some pretty striking changes I've seen on Meta platforms in terms of algorithmically recommended accounts and posts that may have previously been demoted or "borderline."

If you want to talk about this, or might know someone who does, reach out! secure contact in my bio.

Pretty incredible that Jeff Bezos' Amazon announced a "$5 billion-plus" partnership w/ a Saudi AI co launched by Mohammed Bin Salman and sent CEO Andy Jassy to meet with him less than 7 years after MBS murdered Jamal Khashoggi, a columnist for Bezos' Washington Post. techcrunch.com/2025/05/13/a...

"This newsletter is and is not about the abyss. Instead of diving down as deep as we can go, we will stretch out and conduct an expedition into how the monsters below have reached up into the places where the light still hits. We’ll also look for monster hunters. But most of all, this newsletter is about finding and interpreting the “glittering distractions” of life online and mapping how these shiny objects fit into a bigger picture."

Like I don't know what the perfect response is to rapidly crumbling journalistic independence and the cowardice of billionaires lmao

If you do end up unsubscribing, consider re-investing that money in a reporting or accountability project that you feel is serving your community, whether that's local, independent, national, or special interest, etc.

You can simultaneously acknowledge that cancelling a WaPo subscription in protest may have a bigger impact on the journalists who work there than on Bezos's personal wealth AND ALSO note that unsubscribing to a publication that has broken your trust as a reader is a valid way to respond to that. It might also be one of the few things that the leadership there will listen to.
