Just as a note from a German, this German self-understanding wasn't always like this, and is largely a product of the 70s. The allies left Germany having made sure a fairly good constitution was in place, but the mindset of people, and with it what was taught in high school only changed after we were a generation removed from the Holocaust, with adult children disgusted by their parents, asking what they had done.

Plus, it's not like the Holocaust came out of nowhere, anti-Semitic sentiment was widespread since at least the Middle Ages, with pogroms being a repeated event throughout the centuries.

This is mostly to say that this isn't an unchangeable or unpreventable fate in America, and believing that it is, citing a history of genocide underestimates what people are capable of, leading to defeatism.

This can be changed, and it must be changed.
