teacher: what does “agnostic” mean?

me: I don’t know

teacher: correct! how about “ambivalent”?

me: *shrug*

teacher: yes! how about “nihilistic”?

me: what difference does any of this make?

teacher: amazing

@rebrafsim What's the difference between ignorance and apathy?

I don't know, and I don't care.

Me (but about 30 years younger): Dad, what does it mean in German "noch einmal"?

Dad: once again

Me: (louder) "noch einmal!"

Dad: once again

Me: ROFL 😁

That was accidental but i also recalled this old joke:
- what does "rien" mean in French?
- nothing
- impossible!! It has to mean something!

The French: »Oh, that’s what that thing is called!«

This is pretty much the only reason I made it through high school.

@rebrafsim Ambivalent recently meant you feel strongly about both options. I think it's a shame it's losing that meaning - it's a useful thing to have a word for!

@rebrafsim one of the punchlines is "Who knows and who cares?"
@rebrafsim Reminds me of the difference between ignorance and apathy. "I don't know and I don't care."

@rebrafsim What's the difference between a pedant and a kleptomaniac?

One takes things literally, the other takes things... literally.

Agonistic doesn't mean, "I dunno".

It means "without". Compare that with atheism, which means that person knows (in their own mind) that there are no deities.

Big difference:

1. ) I dunno! I'm so fricken' confused by it all!!!

And...

2. ) There are no gods, you're all a bunch of fucking idiots!

Similarly, there's polytheistic folks...

3. ) Gods are everywhere, they abound in ask aspects of life and the great beyond.

And...

4. ) Monotheism - there is only one true God.

So, you believe in a , or many possible gods, you don't fucking know what to believe, or you believe your in your own coz there ain't no deities at all.

@rebrafsim very nice! 🙂

(though for agnostic I’d have used "how could I know?"

Reminds me of the time when I forgot what the insertion sort algorithm was on a Computer Science test, so I just generically described sorting and it turned out that I accidentally described it correctly. #compsci #cs #computerscience https://universeodon.com/@rebrafsim/109790415613276164
