Politics feels especially heavy right now, at least to me. I have been thinking about #SelfCare. I have been learning new skills just for fun and interest, as a way of attending to my own agency. Wondering what others have been doing?
Not sure I phrased the previous post aptly. I believe #SelfCare is itself a political act. What feels so heavy right now are public, political events. I know I have to equip myself to attend and respond well to these events, hence, the need for self-care.
Revisiting self-care as a political act - Notes from Calico Manor

I hate the term "self-care." It is always sounds too woo-woo to me. It carries connotations of superficiality, summoning up the image of people relying on scented candles to handle oppression, injustice, subordination. Because the phrase has been hijacked by "influencers" and by marketers, it can seem that self-care is not-politics, that it requires inattention

@heidilifeldman When it’s too much, I just start taking in top line info. I also consume left, right, and center podcasts like Beg to Differ for more nuanced, respectful debate. I am also stepping up my Pilates.
@heidilifeldman Same here. Creating more art, walking, more books, music & films. Still keeping up with the news but more limited. Feeling much better.

@heidilifeldman

To be perfectly honest, somewhat railing against it.

Do what you need to do, e.g.watch or refrain -- but this seems like it should be more private.

I'm not at all convinced that we're doing anyone any favors with what to me feels like *too much* "lets take of ourselves because the videos are ugly"

AKA, forgive the snark, but Tyre himself. probably had a much worse day than most people talking about this.

@jrm4 I appreciate you responding.
Self- care is a tough topic. I think it has to be practiced, and discussed, seriously so that it doesn’t seem like boo-hooing rather than part of a sustained political stance.
Tyre’s pain, and the loss of him, is part of what has been heavy to me, more than the video evidencing the pain and horror of how he was killed.
@heidilifeldman I constantly use the political chaos of the day to inspire art that: (1) comments on society, (2) encourages perseverence, (3) educates about history, and (4) encourages positive action against tyranny and for love. Thus far, my biggest work of art along those lines is my illustrated e-book “The Girl with the Bloody Dreadlocks,” a thriller based on breaking news and Bible prophecies: https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Bloody-Dreadlocks-Killer-Satanic-ebook/dp/B08MWV3TQL

@heidilifeldman Some of the things I do - being outside with nature every day, a gratitude practice, and photography.

Attached: 1 image Looking forward to getting back to some #photography. Especially in the darkness of winter, I try to take a few minutes each day to focus with intention and gratitude on something of beauty that surrounds us, and it brings light and at least a breath of calm to my day. I was sharing an image a day with friends, then started posting them, (then paused). I think I’ll repost some now and then. I hope you enjoy them. #flowers #flowerphotography #nature #art #mastoart #artmatters #expressyourself

@heidilifeldman Much less news now here too. Most times I check, they're showing something horrific over & over & over. I have found some good conversations, but why repeatedly show brutal crimes?

And insurrectionists not being held accountable & many seated in congress. Will big names ever be brought to justice?? Who knows? Now, a campaign that should not exist is being covered. Delayed justice is causing irreparable harm.

More time reading & writing and trying to find the joy in each day.

@heidilifeldman thanks, I just shut off the news and turned on a classical playlist on Spotify for the half hour before bed.
