Judaism Unbound - Episode 363: Dissolving Your Self - Dan and Lex

Dan and Lex, in the 6th episode in an ongoing mini-series on Jewish spirituality, want to soak in some of the lessons they've taken from their previous conversations in this unit. They explore how spirituality ties to questions of self, of community, and of society, and whether a central component of spirituality might boil down to dissolving one's sense of self. They also announce some exciting news: the launch of the UnYeshiva's brand-new certificate-program in Unbound Judaism! Learn more via www.judaismunbound.com/certificate , where you can take your first steps in our application process. Register for our upcoming courses in the UnYeshiva (beginning in early February), via JudaismUnbound.com/classes, and access full shownotes for this episode via this link.

@lexaphus one thought I had about the idea of spirituality of the dissolving of the self ---as an #Autistic person, I have mixed feelings about this concept. In one sense, I resonate with the idea that the boundary line between me, you and the world can be blurry, and that we are all deeply connected in many, many ways.

Yet... There is something powerful too about our specific uniqueness. Humans are not interchangable and maybe each of our individual perspectives have...

@lexaphus ... have value.

To be frank, one of the reasons I chose Judaism as my primary spiritual home is that I felt Judaism did a better job of recognizing the importance of both the communal and the individual, in ways I didn't see us clearly in other traditions.

In Buddhism the whole point of enlightenment is to become nothing, while in Christianity there is a powerful emphasis on self denial. Judaism sets a different balance.

@lexaphus another question that came up for me from the episode is the question of defining what is a spiritual practice?

In the episode there was a bit of discussion about this but no firm answer, so I'm curious what others think?

@jmb @lexaphus thank you for introducing me to this podcast
@OmNomNomigon @lexaphus It is one of my favorites. The back catalog of past episode (I think more than 300) are worth delveing into too.
@jmb @lexaphus I have listened to a few of the bag catalogue: don’t know if I could ever make my way through all of it though!

@OmNomNomigon @jmb

That's entirely reasonable!! Just pick some that look interesting :-).

I've probably listened to about 2/3 of them at this point, hoping to listen to all of them by the end of this year!
