#Mastodon #Beer question of the day - package versus draft prices. Where you live, if given the choice, would you rather pay for a 'pint' in a bar or save the money and drink at home/away from home with a can, bottle, or six-pack? #MastodonBeer

@beer that kinda depends on a lot of factors?

Sometimes a bar is great, sometimes my own couch (or lawn, I long for summer) is the place to be.

Over here, availability is also a thing. Growlers are out of the question, so sometimes a bar is the only place you can drink a specific beer.

@atlefren Good point.
For us, it depends on price. A bar might have great ambiance, friendly staff, and a reasonable draft menu. But when a pint sets you back 7 or 8 dollars, and the address pallid, we tend to favor the same beer in a four-pack for an average of $4 or $5.
But that doesn't mean there aren't places worth the coin.
And yeah, the years of growlers, crowlers, or growlettes (aka, 32-ounce growers) are behind us.

@beer I gladly pay 15* dollars in a bar for a beer that sets me back 7 at the store, if I'm in the mood for going to a bar. It all comes down to where I want to be on a given evening.

(*yeah, the beer prices in Norway are apeshit)

@atlefren Good point! FWIW, they can be excessive in airport bars across the states.
We recall back in 2013, attending GABF and the cost of a New Belgium La Folie was $12.
For comparison, on average in the PNW, it was around $7 dollars in 2013 (we think it was). Meanwhile, an average pint of IPA in the PNW was around $5.
But yeah, we also get cost v. positive emotional restoration. That makes total sense.

@beer For me I'd rather sit at home with my wife, a cat and maybe a book to go with the drink.

I work for a contract manufacturer, beverages amongst other things and appreciate the creativity and work that goes into a well crafted product. I just like to do it at home :)

@nerdboi makes total sense.
Today's question came to mind after three stops as part of an outing. The first place costs were pretty fair, the second the industry standard ($7), and the last place was happy hour.
But what stood out was how quickly in 20 years, costs went from $4 to $7, which adds up to around $6-$9 difference at the end of an evening.
So we wondered aloud if it made more sense to grab a four-pack takeaway and then relax at home.
@beer Depends on where my social anxiety levels are at. I'm more likely to drink a pint at a place I'm a regular at, but might do just to go at less frequented places.
@gnitro Agreed!
One of us doesn't do well in strange crowds. So, we stay close to our home.
Showing up early to a taproom or bar is rewarding when it's just a handful of customers in a large/medium space.
@beer Yeah I definitely prefer to show up as close to opening as possible. Not only is it less busy, but it gives me time to chat with the servers before it gets too busy.
@beer
Home, outside in the backyard with the firepit. Perfect!
