I plan to switch from #TrueNASCore to #unraid . First I thought about using #TrueNASSCALE since it's Linux based and I can run docker with it,... But since I use my #Nas/server for private use I would like to spin down my HDDs from time to time, and that isnt straight forward with #zfs. Any thought?

@klaushipp I haven't used TrueNAS, but I built an #unraid server for home use in 2018 (for Plex, and backups of my PCs). Haven't had any problems yet.

The initial setup was easier than I expected, and everything still works like it did the first day. The disks spin down most of the time. I currently have 2 parity and 2 array disks, as I found the 2nd parity at a good price and didn't need the space at the time.

I think you won't regret it if you want Unraid's features!

@xerxesshouldnthavewon ah thank you for that feedback! Do you have cache in use right now? Or is the speed fast enough? Do you have any Webservices like Nextcloud running?
@klaushipp Yeah I do have 2x256GB m.2 SSDs as cache (2 for redundancy in case one dies because I don't wanna be bothered lol).
If I built it again, I'd get larger ones (probably 512 GB) but it's not really a problem.
If you set your settings right and the cache is filled before the mover runs to move everything to the array, the next movie/whatever you copy to the server will just be written directly to the array.
@klaushipp I don't have Nextcloud (although I'm thinking about it), but I have a Minecraft server, a gitlab instance for self use, and lately SearchXNG. And the *arr stack (Sonarr, Radarr, Transmission...).Also, a VPN to access those remotely (OpenVPN previously, Wireguard in the latest versions of Unraid).
@xerxesshouldnthavewon @klaushipp i think you’d like the cloudflared Docker and zero trust tier setup vs vpn. So nice!
@geoffrothman @klaushipp Hm, didn't know about that. It's pretty interesting. Thanks!
@xerxesshouldnthavewon @klaushipp I've been a big fan of Unraid since I set it up last year. It's dead simple, which I prefer to the likes of FreeNAS and ZFS.
@dHeinemann @klaushipp Yep, I had very little time to set it up when I built the server, and everything worked without issues. Also the ability to install different size disks at any time was important for me.
@xerxesshouldnthavewon @dHeinemann yeah the point of combining HDDs with different sizes was one point why I plan to use unraid. I will go for it for sure now. Thank you two! :)
@klaushipp Way more knowledgeable folks out there than me that can weigh in on this… but I repurposed a bunch of old enterprise gear in 2019 and started with #unraid and have loved every second of it. The Serverbuilds.net forums and Discord community have been massively helpful, as well as videos by ibracorp.io and SpaceInvader One on YouTube!
