Competition idea: The Generalist Games.

Over the course of many days/weeks/episodes, contestants compete against each other across dozens of different disciplines: bake a cake, play tennis, code a simple app, do a dance routine, make a pot, design a logo, solve a crossword puzzle, build a chair, hit a bullseye in darts, perform a lip sync, survive in the wild, play chess, etc.

@jkottke
Are you watching Taskmaster?
@jkottke Change the title to ā€˜Adapt Or Die’ and you’ll have all the networks throwing money at you for the rights šŸ˜€
@jkottke just casually throwing "survive in the wild" in there with the others, huh
@erik @jkottke I was just about to say…

@jkottke Yes. I like this idea.

I watch so many competition shows already; I want to see someone mash them together.

@jkottke I believe we have something like that in the Netherlands which is titled (roughly translated) ā€œThe one who can do it allā€.

They start with 100 contestants that need to perform ā€œtasksā€ like shoot an arrow in a bullseye, peel a potato, create a house of cards, etc. But the goal is simply to not be the worst, as that player needs to leave the game. The rest continues with another task until only one is left.

@paulsprangers The Dutch have all the cool game show ideas!
@jkottke it’s like jeopardy but for skills
@jkottke specialization is for insects.
@jkottke and the person who does the most perfectly adequate job at each task wins šŸ˜„
@jkottke And each skill could be judged by a different set of Granny/Grandpa Judges, like on Baking It.
@jkottke sounds like the kind of thing Heinlein would have loved.

@jemaleddin @jkottke something in that vein is central to Piers Anthony's "Apprentice Adept" series

@JoeGermuska @jkottke I was thinking specifically of this Heinlein quote:

ā€œA human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.ā€

@JoeGermuska @jkottke (and trying to forget the weird sexual politics of Piers Anthony books! šŸ˜€)
@JoeGermuska @jkottke growing up on Xanth and the rest was VERY CONFUSING.

@jemaleddin @jkottke I mean, Heinlein, too… but Anthony!

Of course, the internet has weighed in, and it's far worse than I remembered...

"I will say only this: please, read someone else’s books, and try to get your children to do so as well. I smell something rotten at the core of this writer’s output, and I know I’m not alone."

@JoeGermuska @jkottke OH WOW! I learned to drive in 1989, and missed that centerpiece of that article!
@jkottke ā€œJack of All Trades - Master of Noneā€
@jkottke Call it Platon, after Platon Karataev, a minor character from Tolstoy's "War and Peace." Simple, fit, and straightforward, he "could do everything, not very well but not badly. He baked, cooked, sewed, planed, and mended boots. He was always busy, and only at night allowed himself conversation—of which he was fond—and songs."
@jkottke like taskmaster then, but serious?
@jkottke Sounds a bit like the British show ā€˜Taskmaster’; very entertaining!

@jkottke

Here’s a list for your show: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Competent_man

Competent man - Wikipedia

@jkottke

But can you manage the soft skills component

Resolve a workplace dispute amicably
Apologize for a disproportionate reaction
Have dinner with parents and critique one boundary violation
Intervene in a sexist conversation
Give kind, direct feedback to a colleague
Say ā€œnoā€ to something you don’t want to do
Tell someone nicely you don’t want a second date with them

@jkottke dang I could do all these things ranging from well to mediocre, except maybe lip syncing. I guess that means I’m a generalist!
@jkottke SIGN ME THE FUCK UP! I AM GAME! šŸ† 🧠 šŸ³ šŸ’ƒšŸ½
@souris @jkottke What Souris said! ā˜ļø
@jkottke this is highly likely to be ā€˜The ADHD Games’.
@jkottke I’d seriously love that. To participate, possibly to watch.
