Who has an unpopular tech opinion? (Promise I won’t tell anyone)
Mine is: USB-A is not a legacy port. I know, I know
@monicawchin wasn’t actually expecting any hot takes…
@mickregan every time I say this in a review I’m roasted across the internet
@monicawchin you shouldn’t be, I agree! Whilst USB-A isn’t a legacy port, I sure wish it was.
@monicawchin it’s 2023 and I’m using like 8 USB-A devices on a laptop with exactly two ports, both USB-C
@monicawchin Vinyl records sound better coming through my Sonos system than through hardwired speakers.
@itswilltime honestly I understand this. Sonos sounds pretty good to me
@monicawchin the Zune was as good, if not better in many ways, than the iPod but Microsoft has a like 50/50 hit rate with keeping new lines of business alive. See also Windows Phone.
@developerjustin interesting. I do remember the days when all the cool kids at my school had a Zune. That didn’t last that long!
@monicawchin "install our mobile app!" is the new "install our browser plug-in!" (I am an old)
@voxphoto okay this is kind of true though lmao
@monicawchin iPads are computers….
@nichagan too far sorry
@monicawchin how do I report harassment on mastodon? Not related to this, I promise.
@monicawchin Stage Manager isn’t nearly as bad as everyone says it is, Spatial Audio is good, and Windows Phone had a better UX than Android ever did
@hcmarks @monicawchin throughout the betas, Stage Manager was awful. once it shipped it was upgraded to really bad. as of 16.2/16.3, it’s aggressively fine (and my default).
@jeremystanley i don’t use it on the Mac, but I do enjoy it on my iPad.
@jeremystanley @hcmarks yeah I’m still not using it, but I recognize that I’m old and curmudgeonly as users go. It seems like people who were already using Spaces (I wasn’t) are adopting it more readily
@hcmarks interesting. I don’t necessarily think stage manager is bad, I just don’t see it as having a ton of use on a Mac (while I do think it makes a lot of sense on the iPad)
@monicawchin that’s exactly how I use it. I use Moom on the Mac to manage my windows, but on iPad I’ve found Stage Manager really useful.
@monicawchin Cryptocurrencies improved security (after causing much damage) by directly monetizing weaknesses, making money flow to the highest expected value theft or attacks, thereby exposing them / identifying them for all to see (and eventually patch or remedy).
@monicawchin the Palm Pre was better then the iPhone
@jeremiahk @monicawchin I still have a burning desire to own one of those little guys one day!
@jeremiahk damn, lots to unpack there
@monicawchin Nearly all Google services, including search, have been declining in quality for years
@bailorg I definitely still think gmail is superior to all the other mail things I’ve tried, and I like the new stuff they’ve done with Chrome, but Search is totally useless to me these days
@monicawchin Apple Music is better than Spotify.
@ramontron NEVER say that to a Spotify user… (but I agree)
@pandapoo Learned this lesson the hard way when I said this to a group of Spotify users.
@ramontron okay but this is just correct
@monicawchin I like Apple’s Magic Mouse.
@Democ do people not like this mouse? This mouse has always seemed fine to me
@monicawchin Yeah. They don’t like the ergonomics, and I do agree the charger being on the bottom is a little silly. I thankfully have a gen 1 version, so I just swap rechargeable AA batteries all the time. 😁
@Democ that’s true, the charger location is very bad
@monicawchin My actual unpopular tech opinion is that mesh Wi-Fi should be avoided if possible. Actually Wi-Fi in general should be avoided if possible.
@monicawchin Phones with Dual PHYSICAL SIM slots are superior!
@monicawchin Apple forgot how to make a good mouse
@monicawchin bluetooth is bullshit and proof the industry is lazy.

@monicawchin lightning is a better connector than USB-C.

They should have designed USB-C the same way where the cable was the male part and the device was the female part (like plugging lightning cable into an iPhone)

@monicawchin macOS is not easy to use. Most of us who grew up on windows and tried to move to the Mac as adults, there was a learning curve and it isn’t easy as everyone says it is
@eshwarnag I think the same would be true going the other way; learning a new OS just gets harder as you get older (and more knowledgeable about the one you learned originally).
@maplefields I agree! but the narrative I hear in North American tech reviewers is that macOS is easy to use compared to windows, which I never found true in Asia where we mostly grew up with Windows. Most of my friends and family find macOS difficult to use.
@monicawchin selfi is the most disgusting word ever
@Droidgeek Now you say it, I think you could be right! 😂
@monicawchin small hard drives are superior to large hard drives. No one needs three tb of files on their laptop to worry about.
