#Lützerath
Back in 2018, I told the Coal Commission that coal emissions cannot extend to beyond 2030 unless very deep cuts are made fast (which they weren't). And that was not even for 1.5C but for <2C, and with data from 2017: six high emission years have since passed, using up a lot of the CO2 budget. Here's original material I showed back then. I spoke as an expert for the gvmt's Council on the Environment SRU. The commission ignored this expert advice. It did not fit the "compromise" 2038.

@W_Lucht

I appreciate that Germany is dealing with an exceptional energy transition from Russian Gas, and that burning Lignite at all is criminal, and that the Lützerath battle is a crucial campaign in the war to save us from global warming. But...

At least those lines are going down, and the number are in Mt.

This is how much coal China extracts:

2020 3.902 Gt
2021 4.126 Gt (4.07 Gt also reported)
2022 4.4 Gt (est. based on 8m)

Enormous, more than RoW, and rising.

I don't know what actions other states could take to compensate for that increase and reduce global emissions to achieve 1.5C by 2100, or 2C for that matter.

@Pampa
The German Constitutional Court, in its historic ruling on climate justice, has clearly stated: 1) what others do does not absolve the gvmt from an obligation to do what is necessary in its own jurisdiction, and 2) that Germany has to engage in a pro-active international climate policy, i.e. be an active leader. If we get into everybody pointing to the others, it won't work. Once the transition gets rolling, all will follow. China is also a leader in renewables.

@W_Lucht

"Once the transition gets rolling, all will follow." Hope so.

@Pampa
Or, put another way: it's probably our only hope.
