Nice… dog gets through the fence (again) and while I’m there to get him, next door neighbour lets slip that our landlord is apparently looking to sell the place.

“Oh, he didn’t mention it to us.”

“He’s looking privately.”

“That’s nice.”

Fucking landlords and this whole fucking system, really.

Lost count how many times we’ve had to move in the past few years alone. Just when you’re getting productive, some dickhead decides he wants to sell or move in himself (what happened last time).

FFS!

Right, wrote to the landlord, apparently he spoke to the neighbour “a few years ago” about “possibly” selling it back then. Has no plans to do so now.

Bloody hell, Mr. Neighbour!

The damn precariousness of it all is the worst bit.

@aral I wonder who's going to profit if the landlord cannot find a tenant for more than a few years...
@aral maybe ask about buying? do you like the house?

@CTrevethan No way we could afford it (short of selling out, which I don’t plan to do this lifetime) ;)

(And if we could, there are better ones around.) :)

@aral “Move in himself” I can respect more than selling secretly.
@aral which is not to discount either the rest of your statement nor to minimize your problems. The housing situation is bad and not really improving. See also “back to the office” people.
@gewalker @aral That's usually a cover for getting new renters at higher prices...
@derickr @aral I don’t doubt it, but if someone actually occupies a home, I am less willing to throw shade. That’s all. I have zero love for the real estate market and spent the last 25 years getting thoroughly out of it.
How much money would you need to buy the place yourself? This sucks.
@Erik Way more than we have. For some reason it seems that working for the common good for almost the past decade isn’t entirely compatible with being able to afford a house in Ireland :)

The concept of renting a place also loses all meaning when you consider what your landlord most likely does is take a loan from the bank to buy your house in the first place, then use your rent to pay off the loan.

So, essentially, you pay for the house, but in the end your landlord “owns” it.

Shame.

@aral your lease sells with the property, fwiw
@ShaneB Not in Ireland. You have very few rights. At most, they just have to give you as much notice as is legally required. Since we’ve been here for over a year now, that’s six months notice for us.
@aral ah sorry, didn’t realize (so probably should have shut up!). Six months is something… you’d get one after lease expires in America. Sorry for the hassle.

@ShaneB No worries, you were just trying to help :)

I also just looked it up and it seems they passed a law to ban evictions between Jan-Mar because it’s so hard to find a place here. So we’re likely looking at September soonest if (a) he actually is looking to sell (just wrote to him to ask) and (b) if he finds someone.

@aral crazy.. just so upsetting for you and yours.. thinking of you all..😣😞

@kcsorenby Thanks, Karin. It‘s just the life most folks of our generation have. And we’re nowhere near being the worst off.

Appreciate the kinds words :)

@aral so true. So very true…🙏
@aral I also want to say that… my thoughts are that.. we are many with bad moments in our life.. I think we who are here should pick each other up.. that’s what matters.. ☺️

@aral that is bad.

In germany, you can only seel/buy with the renting contract, conditions do not change with landlord.

But, self-use is a reason to break contracts. And lota of peiple buy to move in...

@aral landlord moving into the place you're renting is the worst. We moved across the country, were very specific about finding a landlord who wanted long-term tenants, and within 7 months of signing the lease we got an email telling us to find a new place to live bc he's gonna move in. It kills your savings/money plans to have to move so often and it's beyond frustrating when you have to move for reasons you 100% cannot control.

Best of luck to you, it's tough out there!

@bmfsays Yep and yep. And thanks (and ditto!) :)
@aral or decides that he wants to update the rent to match "current market value"
They changed it a few years ago, but before it was up to the tenant to prove that wrong, instead of to the landlord to prove that true.
@aral I'm relieved I managed to but a house a few years back, the prices are crazy and the uncertainty of renting in Ireland is absurd.
