I've gotten more active on YouTube the past few months and I'm flabbergasted at how strong the racist movement is on that platform. I don't know how they'll ever recover, but this isn't good for our national safety and progress.

To me its also a reminder of why @alexwinter's documentary "The YouTube Effect" is one everyone should watch. Alex has done a massive service to society, and I encourage all of you to see the documentary. It's excellent and a must watch.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter I think they have to recognize there's a problem and desire change before they can recover.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter Can you please comment on your social media strategy for increasing YouTube presence? I suspect many of us who lost audience after leaving Twitter are considering other platforms. This Mastodon platform is great but growth is agonizingly slow. LinkedIn live audience growth has increased a little for activist posts but again, too slow to be significant.
@Onlineadviser @alexwinter I don't have a particularly massive YouTube presence. Just broke 10K subs. The strategy I've used is to find your niche, be consistent in posting about it, and put out high quality content.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter Thanks. I used that exact simple strategy to build a successful online publishing business in the early days of the Internet 1995-2010. Sold it in 2010. Strategy considerations for marketing and distribution seem much more complicated now. I contracted with a local,network to produce a streaming media TV show in their studio this year but the network owner hates social media. So I’m struggling to find a marketing strategy.
@Onlineadviser @QasimRashid @alexwinter how did you increase your Twitter following? Did that not require a lot of hard work over a long period of time? Or did you advertise?
@aristeon @Onlineadviser @alexwinter same as here. Good content in my niche and quality content.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter So sad it has gone that route. I will check out the documentary.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter YouTube has been a sewer of hate and disinformation for a long time.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter it's also scary how the dark web is active on YouTube. Horrible stuff

@QasimRashid @alexwinter you should watch our interview with @alexwinter about it

The YouTube Effect
@HiFi @QasimRashid @alexwinter
Thx. I already checked there. Maybe it's not avail yet.
@QasimRashid Can you please tell us more about the racism you've experienced on Youtube?
@QasimRashid @alexwinter YouTube, what a cesspit of evilness intersecting with complete "meh". I only use that site when I have to post videos to, feh!, my office's account.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter

QR: "I encourage all of you to see the doc."

So I go to the movie's website, to find out where/how it's streamable. All I find is a Screenings page. It was at several Film Festivals. And a Canadian Premiere coming up.

Seems odd to call something a "must watch" if it's not available to everyone.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter A lot of news sites aren't doing their job on Youtube and other platforms by deleting racist comments. They should also do their part, and not depend solely on reports and the platforms to remove the racism, bigotry, etc.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter I wish people would use VIMEO more.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter

Youtube is *still* promoting Andrew Tate videos.

@QasimRashid Youtube is a cesspool of misinformation that feed’s conspiracy theorists on a daily basis.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter We have zero leadership from politicians because outrage drives clicks, & clicks = cash, and politicians are in the pocket of capital

@QasimRashid @alexwinter Recovery implies they want to. They don't.

And yes it pollutes our public debate. It's bad.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter Concerted attacks everywhere. It's a small number, but they come in waves and target things.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter

I need to see this!

I've noticed for YouTube, as for Facebook and The Bird Site, people tend to say "the algorithm," as if computers were somehow to blame. I mean, we don't have an algorithm here because ACTUAL HUMAN BEINGS decided not to. We could switch off all "the algorithms" today if they wanted to.

@QasimRashid @alexwinter where can I see this documentary, I went to his website and could see the film but no way to access it? I’d be prepared to pay, just can’t seem to get to the actual film itself.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter I had a couple of relatives who went down a rabbit hole of satanist bs on YouTube. I could not convince them that this was probably not a good idea and that no there is no such thing as nice satanism.
@QasimRashid @alexwinter I won't use YouTube if I can help it, I won't watch anything it suggests, the algorithm is vile dog shit designed to keep people watching as long as possible by feeding our darkest feelings to keep us engaged, which mostly means delivering far right vile content & conspiracy theories...
