EXTREMELY RARE footage of the elusive box jellyfish Chirodectes. Larger than a soccer ball, this jelly is a true ocean mystery, and this video is one of the only in existence, filmed off the coast of Papua New Guinea in 2021.

@RebeccaRHelm The link works fine & this is amazing! but no image on Mastadon-web except a black box (2 devices) - maybe good to edit & add a still image so that people have some idea & know that they should click link for the video?
@RebeccaRHelm @ClaireFromClare That might be due to federation policies on the side of mstdn.science. I noticed a rather odd behavior when trying to follow users from that instance. Normally, I can directly log into my instance, but in the case of mstdn.social I have to copy a link to the user account and head over to my instance or a mobile app, searching for the user there.
In any case, viewing the post in two different apps works fine, but also not on the web.
@RebeccaRHelm @ClaireFromClare Might be an administrative issue. Maybe the admins of mstdn.social have disabled playing animated gifs on their site? (I’m not sure if that’s even possible and right now cannot check with my personal instance. Will keep you posted, though, as soon as I find something.)
@RebeccaRHelm @ClaireFromClare I’m talking about mstdn.science, of course. Seems that my AC has already adjusted to the fediverse…

@konqrunner @RebeccaRHelm
Thanks Axel. I now think it may be my instance that doesn't play the gifs, after more experiments reported at https://h-net.social/@ClaireFromClare/109567518603340242

& in the follow-on post I relayed info that replies may not all be visible to each reader, depending on the instance...

so now realising that readers here may see or not-see in different ways, & as writers it's good to be aware!

I'll make more use of "open original page" (left-click the 3 little dots at bottom right of each post)...

Attached: 1 image @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] Thanks for both suggestions, neither worked & I have now tested on 3 devices & on Firefox Chrome Safari & Edge: black box, and no response even when clicked. (Nor did the URL respond to clicks, but I cut & pasted to go to the ScubaKavieng Facebook post.) I am wondering if it depends on home instance: video shows fine when I go to the original post on mstdn.science (& in seconds before loading has an encouraging blue-green screen). Screenshot attached.

@konqrunner @RebeccaRHelm I just saw a discussion about non-display of animated gifs which seems to confirm that the problem lies with my instance, but also explains how server administrators can fix it: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/21258

I have written to @mastodonadmin & relay the info here in case other readers report the same issue!

Meanwhile I'm glad I learned to "Open original page" & enjoy the posts, thanks Rebecca! Relieved to read here, as birdsite deteriorates...

I can now see #AnimatedGifs here on #Mastodon! & my timeline is full of vibrant images rather than depressing black boxes. I think the issue was at my instance, in which case thank you @mastodonadmin for fixing.

I'm glad this prompted me to "Open original page" every time as I only then realised that this is the way in which to see all replies, but am now delighted to see the range of past posts grouped together in full-colour on the profile page @RebeccaRHelm & look forward to future delights!
