Fundamentalist parents can see their children as extensions of themselves, refusing to accept them for who they are. This can foster emotional enmeshment with their children, leading to a dysfunctional relationship where the child feels ultimately responsible for their parents’ feelings. @JaniceSelbie Admittedly it can be extremely dangerous in fundamentalist situations (and other situations), but IMO _all_ parents are in danger of seeing their children as extensions of themselves.

@JaniceSelbie

i have an alternate framing which makes sense to me but may not to others.

fundamentalism sources from calvinism, a selfish interpretation of the bible that actively chooses to inflict pain on others and self.

calvinist skydaddy™ shows how much he likes his bestest brats by giving them health and wealth. the brats then are bratty to everyone saying things like “skydaddy says you poor sick people suck.”

not a huge leap from being a brat to harming your kids.
