Ben Ramsey#Thunderbird, as a #Matrix client isn't horrible.
It's not great, either, but some of that is due to the lag and latency you have to get used to when using #Matrix. I wonder how much of that is caused by everyone using the flagship matrix.org service as their home server? If more folks ran their own servers, would that latency decrease or increase?
Tröglödÿt@ramsey when a friend hosted for like five people it was laggy and the decryption quite unreliable, don't remember the name of the server software though
@troglodyt I’ve tried running it several times, myself, but I’ve given up each time.
@ramsey yeah my friend did too, we'll probably give it another go later this year and see if it has gotten smoother. would be nice to have somewhere to share images of the kids without direct corporate exploitation

The official .deb package is ok actually, if you move to a psql database
I once tried to build it myself, and it worked nice - for a while :p then I did something dumb.

@tjmiller It’s a federated chat protocol. It’s a great concept, but IMO the protocol is bloated and should probably be a binary protocol. Instead it’s all over HTTP. It seems laggy a lot of times, and clients can take a while to catch up with messages. The community around it are supposedly good people, but every time I’ve tried asking installation and basic server questions, I get treated like I’m stupid for asking the question. 😢
